It shall have a fine sight as a sailing ship, and shall be dignified. So said one of the fixed plans of construction for the Kaiwo Maru, a training vessel for the Japanese Merchant Navy. Built in 1989, this magnificent ship measures over 361 feet long, has 18 square sails, and 18 fore and aft sails, for a total sail area of 29,708 feet. Used solely for educational training of merchant marine cadets, it replacedthe former Kaiwo Maru ship that was built in 1930 and retired in 1984 after voyaging the distance of 49 times around the world.
