Acanthopanax Root Bark (Acanthopanax gracilistylus; Wu Jia Pi) Powdered: 500 gm (1.17 lb): V
This is Plum Flower brand's nitrogen-flushed vacuum pack. Plum Flower is one of the most distinguished herb housesin the world. Sulfur Free, Chlorine Free, Aluminum Phosphate Free. Sulfites are used to give herbs the appearance of freshness. As with dried fruit. un-sulfured herbs look different than those that are adulterated with preservatives. Herbs that are preservative free are more natural looking and are generally darker. The brightness of the herbs may be appealing, but it indicates the presence of harmful additives. Despite their appearance, unsulfured herbs are more fresh and safer than regular commercially available products. The use of sulfur, chlorine and aluminum phosphate was made unnecessary through the establishment of Plum Flower processing stations in China. Herb harvesters slice and process the herbs fresh, avoiding the need to rehydrate dried herbs later to process. This first step is crucial, as rehydration leads to decomposition and thus the need for preservatives. The herbs are then packed and the packages vacuum-packed, injected with nitrogen, and sealed. The nitrogen process combined with the lack of sulfur treatment inhibits the growth of anaerobic organisms, resulting in safer, higher quality herbs. After opening, store in a cool dry place. The facilities in Lanzhou and Guang Zhou, China, scientifically test each batch of herbs before, during and after the processing to make sure that all the active ingredients are present. Herbs are also tested to ensure that the formulas surpass all FDA guidelines regarding heavy metals. Those herbs exported to the U.S. are voluntarily submitted to the FDA for approval. Finally, batches are regularly sent out for quality control testing in third-party labs to double-ensure that Plum Flower products are 100% free of pharmaceuticals, preservatives and dyes. The Lanzhou and Guang Zhou factories are so clean, they are certified by the Australian Government’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (GMP). These standards surpass any of the FDA, and are considered the highest for any government agency in the world. Varuna Fulfillment Center items are special ordered. These take an extra week to deliver.

Blessed Thistle Herb C/S (Cnicus benedictus) 1 lb: K
This is Frontier's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. Used as an infusion and extract. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Blessed Thistle for 'Loss of appetite, dyspepsia. Contraindications. Side Effects: Allergic reactions are possible. Mean daily dosage: 4 - 6 g of herb; equivalent preparations accordingly. Mode of Administration: Comminuted herb and dried extracts for teas; bitter-tasting galenical preparations for internal use. Action: Stimulation of the secretion of saliva and gastric juices.' Blessed Thistle's sesquiterpene lactonesare responisble for the action described above. These bitter components also serve as hormonal balancers, particularly for the female reproductive organs. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Tonic, stimulant, diaphoretic, emetic and emmenagogue. It is chiefly used now for nursing mothers, the warm infusion scarcely ever failing to procure a proper supply of milk. It is considered one of the best medicines which can be used for the purpose. In large doses, Blessed Thistle acts as a strong emetic, producing vomiting with little pain and inconvenience.' 'Cold infusions in smaller draughts are valuable in weak and debilitated conditions of the stomach, and as a tonic, creating appetite and preventing sickness. The warm infusion - 1 oz. of the dried herb to a pint of boiling water - in doses of a wineglassful, forms in intermittent fevers one of the most useful diaphoretics to which employment can be given.' 'Four different ways of using Blessed Thistle have been recommended: It may be eaten in the green leaf, with bread and butter for breakfast, like Watercress; the dried leaves may be made into a powder and a drachm taken in wine or otherwise every day; a wineglassful of the juice may be taken every day, or, which is the usual and the best method, an infusion may be made of the dried herb, taken any time as a preventive, or when intended to remove disease, at bed time, as it causes copious perspiration.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Their odor is faint and rather disagreeable, and their taste is exceedingly bitter. Their properties are yielded to water or alcohol, forming a pleasantly-bitter draught when infused with the former fluid, but a sickening and repulsive decoction.' 'A cold infusion is tonic; a warm infusion diaphoretic and emmenagogue; and, if strong, emetic.' 'Used as a tonic in loss of appetite, dyspepsia, and intermittent diseases.' 'Valuable also in the forming stage of febrile and inflammatory affections. Colds may be broken up with it, and it acts well in menstrual suppression from cold.' 'Dose of the powder, from 10 to 60 grains; of the infusion, 2 fluid ounces; specific cnicus benedictus, 5 to 10 drops, every 4 hours.'

Kudzu Root C/S (Pueraria lobata; Ge Gen) 1 lb: K
This is Frontier's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. Used as a decoction, extract and tincture. Kudzu is a very versatie herb. Prized in Asian countries as a nutritious table green, it can also be made into delicious jams and jellies. Kudzu shoots are used by nursing mothers as a lactagogue. Kudzu is regarded as a sedative in traditional Chinese medicine, useful for symptoms of hypertension. Kudzu extracts have also been shown to lower blood sugar and blood pressure. The 1985 Chinese Pharmacopoeia recommends 9–15 grams of kudzu root per day for angine pectoris. The roots have been shown to contain more estrogenic isoflavones, daidzein, and genistein than soybeans. Genistein may prevent development of tumors. Daidzein has been shown to reduce blood pressure and venous obstruction. The root is also traditionally used in China for headaches, diarrhea, dysentery, intestinal obstruction, and stomach flu. The root starch is official in the Japanese pharmacopoeia for diarrhea. In one test, by Brooks and Somerville of Marshall University Dept. of Biology, the yeast Candida albicans, and the bacteria Salmonella enteritidis, Escherichia coli, Micrococcus luteus, Vibrio fischeri, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens, and Shigella dysenteriae had their growth inhibited by extracts of Kudzu. This helps to explain why, traditionally, kudzu decoction is used as a gargle for sore throat. A kudzu root extract was shown to have 100 times the antioxidant activity of Vitamin E. Kudzu is traditionally regarded as hepatoprotective. Kudzu extracts have been found to stimulate regeneration of liver tissue while protecting against liver toxins. Also traditionally regarded as a treatment for alcoholism, in that it seems to lessen the desire for alcohol, There is some modern clinical verification for this (see below), but the jury is still out. http://www.herbmed.org/Herbs/Herb113.htm: Observational Studies/Case Reports Kudzu extract shows potential for moderating alcohol abuse. anon 1994 Traditional and Folk Use Pueraria lobata (Ge-gen), which contains an isoflavonoid glycoside with hypotensive effects, with excellent clinical results in the treatment of hypertension; an example of extensive survey of Chinese medicine Qicheng 1980 'Sobering Effects from the Lowly Kudzu' by Angela Spivey at The University of North Carolina The best way to decoct Pueraria lobata is to cut the root into slices of 0.4-0.7 cm, with water 12-15 times the weight of the rootand decoct 30 minutes.
