Alcohol Free Fluid Extract Promotes Restful Sleep Fluid extracts are a highly effective way to administer herbs. They are very concentrated, they work faster than teas and are four to eighttimes stronger than capsules. Extracts are easily digestible and quickly assimilated into the system. Although the flowers are beautiful and sweet-smelling, it is the pungent root that is most sought after today. Used since ancient times, valerian root is as popular today as ever for its beneficial properties. Valerian Root is one of Nature’s most effective herbs for supporting sound sleep, promoting relaxation and relieving anxiety. Known around the world for its calming properties, valerian is a non-narcotic sedative. Valerian has been used for after pains in childbirth, for relief of arthritis pain and cramps. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Valerian root for 'Restlessness, sleeping disorders based on nervous conditions.' 'Dosage: Unless otherwise prescribed: Infusions: 2 - 3 g of drug per cup, once to several times per day. Tincture: ½ - 1 teaspoon (1 - 3 ml), once to several times per day. Extracts: Amount equivalent to 2 - 3 g of drug, once to several times per day. External Use: 100 g for one full bath; equivalent preparations. Mode of Administration: Internal: As expressed juice from fresh plants, tincture, extracts, and other galenical preparations. External: As a bath additive. Actions: Sedative: Sleep-promoting.' The World Health Organization also recommends Valerian as a mild sedative, pain-reliever and sleep-promoting agent. Valerian root contains many constituents, including essential oils that appear to contribute to the herb's sedating qualities. Contemporary clinical studies have demonstrated that Valerian significantly improves sleep quality without morning grogginess. Regular, moderate use produces neither dependency nor health risks. Valerian was included in many editions of the United States Dispensatory (Merck) since 1849, which reported the herb's effect on the nervous system and its ability to produce drowsiness and sleep. Various valerian species are still included in the pharmacopoeiae of many nations including Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The United States Pharmacopeial Convention has accepted a valerian monograph for inclusion in the National Formulary (Pharmacopeial Forum, 1998). It is widely used as a sedative and antispasmodic in the United States. Valerian preparations appear to be candidates for safe and effective nonaddictive alternatives to conventional sleep medications. Valerian roots contain several compounds with demonstrable pharmacological activity. Valerian analyses have primarily focused on the essential oil, valerenic acid and valepotriates. This is Frontier's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. Used as an infusion and decoction. Psyllium is an unusually effective and safe laxative, high in both fiber and mucilage. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Psyllium, both the seed and husk of Plantago ovata, for 'Chronic constipation; disorders whereby easy bowel movements with a loose stool are desirable, e.g., in patients with anal fissures, hemorrhoids, following anal/rectal surgery; during pregnancy; as a secondary medication in the treatment of various kinds of diarrhea and in the treatment of irritable bowel.' 'Contraindications: Stenosis of the gastrointestinal tract. Obstruction or threatening obstruction of the bowel (ileus). Poorly controllable diabetes mellitus. Side Effects: In rare cases allergic reactions may occur. Interactions with Other Drugs: The intestinal absorption of other medication taken simultaneously may be delayed. Warning: There may need to be a reduction in the insulin dosage in diabetics who are insulin-dependent.' 'Daily dose: 4 - 20 g of the drug prepared accordingly. Mode of Administration: The whole drug as well as other galenical preparations to be taken orally. Note: Sufficient fluids must be taken with the drug, e.g., 150 ml water to 5 g drug. The dose should be taken a half hour to one hour after taking other medication.' 'Actions: Diarrhea: An increase of the passage time of the bowel content through bonding of water. Constipation: A decrease of the passage time of the bowel content through increase of the volume of the stool. A lowering of the serum-cholesterol level. A reduction of the postprandial blood sugar increase.' The well-known commercial laxative Metamucil is a preparation of a hydrophilic mucilloid from the husk of psyllium seed. Numerous double blind studies confirm psyllium can lower total cholsterol levels, though high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (a beneficial form of cholesterol) levels are not affected. It is effective in children as well as adults. King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'The seeds, in tablespoonful doses, in a glass of water, before dinner, have been successfully employed to relieve chronic constipation.' The British Pharmaceutical Codex, 1911: 'Ispaghula is official in India and the Eastern Colonies, where it is used as an equivalent of linseed or barley, and the seeds are much used in the East in dysentery and diarrhoea. The decoction is employed as a cooling demulcent drink, or the seeds are mixed with a little sugar and taken dry. In this form they take up water in the intestinal canal, the resulting mucilage acting as a protection to the inflamed mucous membranes.
