Promotes Tranquility The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Passionflower herb for 'Nervous restlessness.' 'Daily dosage: 4 - 8 g of herb; equivalent preparations. Mode of Administration: Comminuted herb for tea and other preparations for internal use.' Passion flower acts like a sedative. It lowers blood pressure, gives relaxation and is a very mild hallucinogen. Passion flower is nature's sleeping pill, very helpful for insomnia, producing no narcotic hangover. It is an effective antispamodic, helpful with seizures, hysteria, asthma, nerve pain and Parkinson's disease. Passion flower contains harmine, harman, harmol, harmaline, harmalol, and passaflorine. For many years, plant researchers believed that the group of harmane alkaloids were the active constituents in passion flower. Recent studies, however, have pointed to the flavonoids in passion flower as the primary constituents responsible for its relaxing and antianxiety effects. The European literature involving passion flower recommends it primarily for antianxiety treatment; in this context, it is often combined with valerian, lemon balm, and other herbs withsedative properties. 'A few years ago, several friends and I boiled down about five pounds of Passiflora incarnata vines and leaves and drank the decoction. Within about 20 minutes, we all began to experience some profound behavioral shifts, all of us acting in a more 'primal' manner. We were also quite energized and 'up', with some slight distortion of colors. This very fun state lasted about three hours or so, followed by a very deep sleep in which all involved experienced quite profound dream states.' Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The drug is known to be a depressant to the motor side of the spinal cord, slightly reducing arterial pressure, though affecting circulation but little, while increasing the rate of respiration. It is official in homoeopathic medicine and used with bromides, it is said to be of great service in epilepsy. Its narcotic properties cause it to be used in diarrhoea and dysentery, neuralgia, sleeplessness and dysmenorrhoea.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'The clinical application of passiflora has been with most observers satisfactory. Its force is exerted chiefly upon the nervous system, the remedy finding a wide application in spasmodic disorders and as a rest-producing agent. It is best adapted to debility and does not act so well in sthenic conditions, although not contraindicated in such. It is specially useful to allay restlessness and overcome wakefulness, when these are the result of exhaustion, or the nervous excitement of debility.' 'It proves specially useful in the insomnia of infants and old people. It gives sleep to those who are laboring under the effects of mental worry or from mental overwork. A shrub or small tree. It is a well known drug for amoebic dysentery and other gastric disorders. A clinical study records the presentation of forty cases with amochiasis and giardiasis. The efficacy of kutaja in intestinal amochiasis was 70%. Good response was also observed in Entamoeba histolytica cystpassers when treated with kutaja bark. The Foundation For Medical Research, Mumbai Holarrhena antidysenterica (L)_Apocyanaceae, well known for its antidiarrhoeal activity was studied for its effect on diarrhoeagenic Escherichia coli. Different dilutions of the decoction of the plant were assayed for its effect on the adherence and toxin production of 2 groups of E.coli.... The decoction was more effective in inhibiting stable toxin production as compared with labile toxin production. Indian Journal of Pharmacology 2001; 33: 392-393 ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF HOLARRHENA ANTIDYSENTERICA [KURCHI, KUTAJ] AGAINST THE ENTERIC PATHOGENS The present study was undertaken to find the antibacterial activity of the crude aqueous and alcoholic extracts of stem bark of Holarrhena antidysenterica against the known enteric pathogens. Holarrhena is a genus of trees or shrubs distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It is a small deciduous tree with white flowers and found throughout the dry forests of India even as far as as Travancore1. The different parts of the plant were used since antiquity in the indegenous system of medicine. As far as our knowledge goes, antibacterial activity of H. antidysenterica against the enteric pathogens has not been reported from India . Considerable work has been carried out on the chemistry and biological activity of Kurchi which has been reviewed by several workers and is reported to have 29 different alkaloids in it. Amoebicidal, antituberculous and other antiprotozoal activity of individual alkaloids especially conessine have been extensively investigated4. Jain and Tarafder have mentioned the use of this plant by the various Indian tribals in cases of number of ailments like anemia, epilepsy, stomach pain and cholera. In Ayurveda, kurchi [kutaj] is used as antihelminthic, for diarrhoea and skin diseases. Portuguese had used it as a hot decoction in bowel infection5,6. The antibacterial activity of the stem bark of H. antidysenterica against the enteropathogens have not been documented so far in Indian literature. Our present work suggests that clinical trial of both aqueous and alcoholic extracts of thestem bark of H. antidysenterica can be carried out against a battery of enteric pathogens, casuative agents of diarrhoea in infants and adults. |

Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The seeds are extensively used as a condiment by the natives of Western and Central tropical Africa, also by the natives of the West Indies and Brazil, who introduced the trees to these countries…. The properties of Kola are the same as caffeine, modified only by the astringents present.' 'Fresh Kola Nuts have stimulant action apart from the caffeine content, but as they appear in European commerce, their action is indistinguishable from that of other caffeine drugs. Kola is also a valuable nervine, heart tonic, and a good general tonic…. Fluid extract of Kola, 10 to 40 drops. Solid extract alc., 2 to 8 grains.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'The action of kola has been compared to that of coffee and cocoa, but it differs even from these, and from that of the two principles—caffeine and theobromine—contained in it. Upon the stomach it appears to exert a tonic influence, improving digestion. This it does either by increasing secretion or by acting upon the circular fibers of the stomach (Monnet).' 'It increases the functions of the cerebro-spinal system and sympathetic system. This is the effect of small and medium doses, rendering one capable of severe mental exertion, overcoming mental depression, and the tendency to somnolency.' Large doses produce overstimulation, and thus tend to destroy the usefulness of the drug when given in proper doses. Physical strength is augmented and sustained by kola, its action upon the muscular system, increasing contractility, being pronounced.' 'Kola is a tonic to the heart, regulating its contractions and increasing its power. Under a weakened state of the heart, kola causes the pulsations to become fuller and less frequent. Arterial tension is increased by the drug, diuresis augmented, an especial increase of the watery portion of the urine having been observed. Tissue waste is retarded under its administration, the excretion of urea being diminished.' 'Kola is undoubtedly of value in certain conditions, hinging chiefly on nervous depression. Hysteria and neurasthenia, with mental gloominess and forebodings, have been relieved by it. In melancholia it appears sometimes useful, particularly ifthat condition be associated with phthisis.' 'Kola may be used in feeble conditions of the heart, especially cardiac irritability, the cases being those in which caffeine is useful. Difficult breathing, irregular action, and valvular deficiency are the indications for its use. It |
