Mucuna pruriens, commonly known as velvet bean or cowitch, is used as a minor food crop and medicinal bean in India, West Africa, and Central America. Toasted ground seeds are used as a coffee substitute. It is regarded as anodyne, antidotal, diuretic, nervine, psychedelic, and powerfully aphrodisiac. It is used as a tea, a strong decoction and a smoke. According to Ayurveda, this herb is a powerful nervine tonic and aphrodisiac, applicable to the treatment of disorders of themale or female reproductive tract, and the spasms associated with Parkinson's or Bell's Palsy. A clinical study confirmed the efficacy of the seeds in the management of Parkinson's disease by virtue of their L-Dopa content, the precursor to the neurotransmitter dopamine.(1) Mucuna pruriens, recognized as an aphrodisiac in Ayurveda, has been shown to increase testosterone levels (2), leading to deposition of protein in the muscles and increased muscle mass and strength(3). In 1937, 31 years after levodopa was synthesized in Switzerland, Indian scientists isolated levodopa from Mucuna pruriens beans. At the time, the importance of levodopa was unappreciated in India and the West. In 1967, following the establishment of the role of levodopa in Parkinson disease, a screening of 1000 species of 135 plant families revealed that only plants from the Mucuna family contained sufficient levodopa to consider commercial development. Recently Dr. Bela Manyam, Professor of Neurology at the Scott & White Clinic, Temple Texas, part of the Texas A & M Medical School, a National Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence, treated Parkinson patients with a powder made from the whole bean of Mucuna pruriens. Mucuna pruriens is a legume, and as a legume it's a rich source of tocopherol, or Vitamin 'E.' Vitamin 'E' has a variety of beneficial effects. Because of it's bulk, Mucuna pruriens acts as a laxative, aiding digestion and counter-acting, in part, the constipation associated with Parkinson disease. Finally, Mucuna pruriens, like other plant extracts, may contain other, as yet unidentified anti-Parkinson drugs. Blue Vervain is recommended by the herbalists as an ease to depression following illness. Blue Vervain had many uses in Native American culture. The seed are edible when roasted and are ground into a powder and used as a piñole flour. The leaves and roots are useful in intermittent fevers. A very strong infusion is emetic. An infusion of the plant is a good galactagogue (increases breast milk) and used for female obstructions, afterpains and taken as a female tonic. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'It is recommended in upwards of thirty complaints, being astringent, diaphoretic, antispasmodic, etc. It is said to be useful in intermittent fevers, ulcers, ophthalmia, pleurisy, etc., and to be a good galactogogue. It is still used as a febrifuge in autumn fevers.' 'As a poultice it is good in headache, ear neuralgia, rheumatism, etc. In this form it colours the skin a fine red, giving rise to the idea that it had the power of drawing the blood outside.' 'A decoction of 2 oz. to a quart, taken in the course of one day, is said to be a good medicine in purgings, easing pain in the bowels. It is often applied externally for piles. It is used in homoeopathy.' 'Fluid extract, ½ to 1 drachm.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Vervain is tonic, emetic, expectorant, and sudorific. In small doses a tincture of verbena relieves gastric irritation.' 'As an emetic and sudorific it has proved beneficial in intermittent fever, given in warm infusion or in powder. In all cases of colds and obstructed menstruation it may be used as a sudorific.' 'Taken cold, the infusion forms a good tonic in some cases of debility, anorexia, and during convalescence from acute diseases. It has been reputed valuable in scrofula, visceral obstructions, gravel, and worms.' 'The following application has been recommended as effectual in promoting the absorption of the blood effused in bruises, and in allaying the attendant pain: Take of vervain, senna, and white pepper, of each, equal parts. Make a cataplasm by mixing with the white of eggs. Dose of the powdered root, from 20 to 40 grains; of the infusion,from 2 to 4 fluid ounces, 3 or 4 times a day, or oftener if it is desired to cause emesis.' |

Some of the finest black teas in the world come from India, the world's leading producer of tea. However, most tea consumed in India is not enjoyed for its fine, subtle flavor nuances, but instead is blended with sweet and pungent spices to make the popular beverage, ''Chai''. Indian Chai is enjoyed in cities and the smallest of villages, and usually is offered to every visitor to a home. In Northern India, where Chai is the beverage of choice, tiny tea stalls line the streets where all day long ''chaiwallas'' (tea vendors) brew and serve tea. Chai is usually brewed very strong with lots of sugar and milk and often concentrated. Traditional Indian Chai combines rich black tea that is boiled in milk and flavored with local spices such as sweet cinnamon, sharp clove, penetrating cardamom, and occasionally black peppercorns, pungent ginger and hot red chilies, and sweetened with sugar. This spicy tea is brewed in a samovar - type vessel and is always served very hot.Hurried customers often pour a little Chai in the saucer to cool it before drinking.
