Mullein Leaf Powder (Verbascum thapsus) 1 lb: C
|
This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Mullein makes a sweet, non-biting, mildly sedative smoke, and is recommended by Grieve in that form, as well as a tea or strong decoction. It is also used as an extract, tincture and lotion. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Mullein flower for 'Catarrhs of the respiratory tract.' 'Daily dosage: 3 - 4 g of herb; equivalent preparations. Mode of Administration: Comminuted herb for teas and other galenical preparations for internal use.' 'Actions: Alleviating irritation; Expectorant.' Mullein is a good anti-inflammatory and demulcent respiratory remedy, very kind to the mucous membranes of the respiratory system, reducing inflammation while stimulating fluid production and thus facilitating expectoration. Externally an extract made in olive oil is excellent in soothing and healing any inflamed surface or easing ear problems. Mullein contains about 3% mucilage and small amounts of saponins and tannins. The mucilaginous constituents are primarily responsible for the soothing actions on mucous membranes. The saponins may be responsible for the expectorant actions of mullein. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The Mullein has very markedly demulcent, emollient and astringent properties, which render it useful in pectoral complaints. The whole plant seems to possess slightly sedative and narcotic properties.' 'The dried leaves are sometimes smoked in an ordinary tobacco pipe to relieve the irritation of the respiratory mucus membranes, and will completely control, it is said, the hacking cough of consumption. Mullein is said to be of much value in diarrhoea, from its combination of demulcent with astringent properties, by this combination strengthening the bowels at the same time.' 'In diarrhoea the ordinary infusion is generally given, but when any bleeding of the bowels is present, the decoction prepared with milk is recommended. On the Continent, a sweetened infusion of the flowers strained in order to separate the rough hairs, is considerably used as a domestic remedy in mild catarrhs, colic, etc.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Mullein is demulcent, diuretic, anodyne, and antispasmodic. It is likewise said to possess marked antiperiodic virtues. Besides, it is mildly nervine, controlling irritation, and favoring sleep. Upon the upper portion of the respiratory tract its influence is pronounced, particularly where the larynx and trachea are involved.' 'The infusion is useful in coughs, protracted colds, catarrh, hemoptysis, diarrhoea, dysentery, and piles. It is applicable to dry, hoarse coughs, which occur chiefly at night, as well as to cough associated with an abundant catarrhal discharge.' 'Its diuretic properties are rather weak, yet it is very useful in allaying the acridity of urine, which is present in many diseases.' 'It may be boiled in milk, sweetened, and rendered more palat

Basil Leaf Powder (Ocimum basilicum; Tulsi) 1 lb: B
|
Known as the 'royal herb' to the ancient Greeks, the botanical name is derived from the Greek 'to be fragrant.' Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': ''In India the Basil plant is sacred to both Krishna and Vishnu, and is cherished in every Hindu house. Probably on account of its virtues, in disinfecting, and vivifying malarious air, it first became inseparable from Hindu houses in India as the protecting spirit of the family. The strong aromatic scent of the leaves is very much like cloves. Every good Hindu goes to his rest with a Basil leaf on his breast. This is his passport to Paradise.'' 'Tulsi' is as widely used in Indian cuisine as in Italian. Basil, widely grown as a kitchen herb, is used fresh or dried to flavour meats, fish, salads, pizza, soup and sauces. The dried leaves have a fragrant aroma faintly reminiscent of anise, and a warm, sweet, aromatic, mildly pungent flavour. Tea made from basil leaves is a stimulant. Basil tea is used for nausea and gas pains. Tea made with basil and peppercorns is a folk remedy to reduce fever. Since the delicate aroma of basil is quickly destroyed by cooking, basil leaves are frequently sprinkled over cold or warm dishes before serving. Capri Salad Capriccio Caprese For 6 persons: 4 ripe tomatoes - 1 lb. 1½ oz. Mozzarella cheese - 2 tsp. finely chopped capers - 6 tbsp. olive oil - salt - 1 tbsp. vinegar - 10 basil leaves. Cut the tomatoes into fairly thin slices and the Mozzarella cheese into slices that are slightly thinner. Arrange the slices, alternating tomatoes and Mozzarella, on a serving dish. Prepare a sauce by blending oil, salt, vinegar and chopped capers. Pour over the tomatoes and cheese and garnish with basil leaves. Pesto Sauce: Place in a food processor 2 cups basil leaves, lightly packed, 2 garlic cloves, minced, 2 tablespoons parsley sprigs, and process until fine. Add 3 tablespoons olive oil, 2 tablespoons grated Parmiggiano-Reggiano cheese, 2 tablespoons pine nuts, and dash salt and pepper, and whir to blend. Pesto is usually served with pasta. Besides tasting excellent, pesto is also efficient in conserving basil, even without deep-freezer (although it does keep better frozen). Thai Chicken with Basil 1 1/3 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 4), cut into 1-by-2-inch pieces 2 tablespoons Asian fish sauce 1½ tablespoons Soy sauce 1 tablespoon water 1½ teaspoons Sugar 2 tablespoons cooking oil 1 large onion, cut into thin slices 3 fresh red Chiles, seeds and ribs removed, cut into thin slices, or ¼ teaspoon dried red-pepper flakes 3 Cloves Garlic, minced 1½ cups lightly packed Basil leaves In a medium bowl, combine the chicken with the fish sauce, Soy sauce, water, and sugar. In a large nonstick frying pan or a wok, heat the oil over moderately high heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes. Stir in the Chiles and garlic; cook, stirring, 30 seconds longer. Remove the chicken from the marinade witha slotted spoon and add it

It is used as a seasoning in innumerable meat dishes, breads, and cheeses, and in such vegetable dishes as sauerkraut, cabbage and beets. Baby Beets with Caraway 1 lb Baby beets 1 ts Horseradish 1 tb Caraway seeds ¾ c yogurt ½ c cottage cheese Place the beets in a medium sized saucepan; cover with water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer until the beets are tender, 20-25 minutes. Rinse the beets under cold water, drain, and slip off the skins. Place the whole beets in a medium size bowl. Add the horseradish, caraway seeds, and lowfat blend; mix thoroughly. Cover and refrigerate for 1-4 hours. Caraway Coleslaw 3 cups shredded cabbage 1 large or 2 small carrots, grated 1 green pepper, finely chopped Mix together and toss with dressing: ½ cup mayonnaise ½ teaspoon dry mustard salt and pepper to taste 1 tablespoon sugar 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 small onion, grated 1 teaspoon caraway seeds 1 tablespoon vinegar Mix all ingredients thoroughly before tossing with cabbage mixture. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Caraway for 'Dyspeptic problems such as mild, spastic conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, bloating, and fullness.' 'Daily dosage: 1.5 - 6 g of seeds; equivalent preparations. Mode of Administration: Freshly crushed seeds for infusions as well as for other galenical preparations for internal use. Actions: Antispasmodic; Antimicrobial.' Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Caraway was widely employed at one time as a carminative cordial, and was recommended in dyspepsia and symptoms attending hysteria and other disorders. It possesses some tonic property and forms a pleasant stomachic.' 'Distilled Caraway water is considered a useful remedy in the flatulent colic of infants, and is an excellent vehicle for children's medicine. When sweetened, its flavour is agreeable.' 'One ounce of the bruised seeds infused for 6 hours in a pint of cold water makes a good Caraway julep for infants, from 1 to 3 teaspoonsful being given for a dose.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Caraway is an aromatic carminative, used in flatulent colic, especially of children, and to improve the flavor of several medicinal compounds. The oil (Oleum Carui) is more generally used. The seeds are frequently added to cakes and confectionaries, to render them more agreeable, while, at the same time, they gently excite the digestive powers. Dose of the seeds, from 10 to 60 grains.' Eclectic Materia Medica, 1922 (Felter): 'An aromatic carminative and gentle stomachic; both the fruit and the oil are of value in flatulent colic and to flavor medicinal compounds.'
