Henna Black Powder: Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria; Qing Dai) 1 lb: C
This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria, Fabaceae) has long been one of the most important dyestuffs; this dye was used as far back as 6000 years in China. Indigo produces an intense deep blue color. The leaves and branches of the plant are harvested, placed in a vat, covered with water, and permitted to ferment. The sludge of partially rotted plant material which settles to the bottom is collected and pressed into cakes. When dry, these produce a powder that makes a colorless solution. The color only develops when an item is dipped into the solution, removed and then exposed to air. Indigo dyeing and the cultivation on the plant originated in India. Because of the good quality of the dye, indigo became an important item of trade between India and other parts of the world by 300 B.C. Dyers in Europe tried to resist the importation of indigo into Europe and were able to do so for a long time. Finally, however, quality won out. Indigo was an early crop in colonial South Carolina. South Carolina indigo was considered excellent, but as the economics were not too good, it was replaced by rice. The leaves contain about 3% indigo. Synthetic indigo was produced in 1897. Although indigo of commerce came from an Old World plant, another species of Indigofera was domesticated and used as a source of a blue dye by the Precolumbian inhabitants of Yucatan. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'A blue dyestuff is obtained from the various species of Indigofera. It does not exist ready formed, but is produced during fermentation from another agent existing in the plant. This is called Indocan, and is yellow, amorphous, of a nauseous bitter taste with an acid reaction; readily soluble in water, alcohol and ether.' 'Medicinal Action and Uses: Indigo was at one time much used in medicine, but now is rarely employed. It is said to produce nausea and vomiting.' 'It is a very well-known and highly important dye, millions of pounds being exported from India annually.'

Phoenix Oyster Culture Syringe (Pleurotus pulmonarius): SW
Cultivation Difficulty: Easy Type: Edible Substrate: Pasteurized straw, wood chips, sawdust, various grains, coffee grounds, agricultural waste, newspaper and cardboard. Colonization/Fruiting Temperatures 75-85F/50-75F The Phoenix Oyster is an aggressive mushroom that fruits easily on a wide range of substrates. This is the most popular mushroom for beginners and is the top choice for introductory mushroom cultivation demonstrations. Fresh oyster mushrooms seen at markets are most often this species. The aggressive and productive nature that makes this mushroom popular also makes it quick to decay after maturity. Harvested mushrooms may continueto grow even if refrigerated and often spontaneously form new primordia. Mushrooms should be consumed or dried within days of harvest for best quality. These mushrooms need plenty of fresh air to develop normally. High carbon dioxide levels from mushroom metabolism will accumulate in sealed growing environments and can reduce cap size and elongate stems severely. Our culture filled syringes are guaranteed clean and viable. They are created with pure isolated culture of mushroom mycelium suspended in a nutrient solution inside a hypodermic syringe. Culture syringes are useful for inoculating sterile substrates, liquid cultures and agar. Our current batch of offered culture syringes utilizes B-D 10cc syringes with luer-lock and 16ga 1-1/2 inch needles. Orders containing syringes will be shipped in small white cardboard boxes sized approximately 10 x 2 x 2 inches. International syringe orders will contain customs labels indicating the contents of the package.

Golden Oyster Rye Based Spawn Starter Kit Small: SW
Cultivation Difficulty: Easy Type: Edible Substrate: Pasteurized straw, hardwood chips and sawdust, various grains, newspaper and cardboard. Colonization/Fruiting Temperatures 75-85F/70-85F The Golden Oyster is an attractive fast growing mushroom that fruits easily on a wide range of ligneous substrates. The mushrooms grow in clusters of small, thin fleshed, funnel-shaped bright yellow caps. The flavor improves dramatically with thorough cooking. Mushrooms tend to be bitter and sour when raw or undercooked. The Golden Oyster is not as productive as other oyster mushrooms, So expect only 2 flushes before the substrate is exhausted. The temperature must be at least 65F to initiate fruiting. These mushrooms also need plenty of fresh air to develop normally. High carbon dioxide levels from mushroom metabolism will accumulate in sealed growing environments and may reduce cap size severely. Our Edible and Gourmet Spawn Starter Kits include everything you need to begin the generation of edible and gourmet mushroom spawn. These kits include the edible mushroom culture and a number of our pre-sterilized bags of rye berries. Small kit includes one bag and 3cc culture syringe. Medium kit includes four bags and a 10cc culture syringe. Large kit includes ten bags and a 10cc culture syringe. Each bag contains just over 1 pound of precooked and pre-sterilized rye berries that can be used for primary spawn generation with culture injection through the self-healing injection site. The Bags included with this kit are specifically designed for primary spawn generation. If you are seeking a Grow Kit product for contained fruiting of Oyster Mushrooms, please see our Oyster Mushroom Grow Kits. To use, unfold the Bag, allowing the extra bag material to stand straight up. Locate the small foam disk sealed and attached in a plastic housing near the base of the Bag. This disc is the self-healing injector site. Note: The disc will be covered by a small plastic shield. Do not attempt to remove the plastic covering the disc, you will inject through it. Sterilize a small section of the outside of the Bag (on the plastic shield) directly over the foam disc with an alcohol soaked wipe. With the same alcohol soaked wipe, sterilize the needle on yourculture syringe. Inoculate the substrate with culture syringe(included) solution by inserting the needle through the plastic shield and foam disc at the previously sterilized spot and squirting 1cc of culture solution into the mixture. Mix culture solution thoroughly by shaking the syringe before injection. (Faster colonization can be achieved by squirting solution into several locations in the substrate mixture). When injection is finished, slowly remove the needle and the foam disc will seal the injection site (no need to tape). DO NOT insert the needle through the white filter patch. Return the inoculated bags back to the shipping box and place in a dark, warm location (species specific). Allow the bag to remain e
