This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as an infusion, decoction, extract, tincture and syrup. Wild Cherry Bark is a strong sedative of the cough reflex. It is used mainly in the treatment of irritating coughs, bronchitis and whooping cough. It has been shown that wild cherry’s cyanogenic glycosides, particularly prunasin, act by quelling spasms in the smooth muscles lining bronchioles, thereby relieving coughs. Grieve's classic ' A Modern Herbal': 'Astringent tonic, pectoral, sedative. It has been used in the treatment of bronchitis of various types. Is valuable in catarrh, consumption nervous cough, whooping-cough, and dyspepsia.' 'Dosages: Syrup, B.P. and U.S.P., 1 to 4 drachms. Tincture, B.P., ½ to 1 drachm. Infusion, U.S.P., 2 oz. Fluid extract, ½ to 1 drachm. Prunin, 1 to 3 grains.' King’s 1898 Dispensatory: 'Wild cherry bark has a tonic and stimulating influence on the digestive apparatus, and a simultaneous sedative action on the nervous system and circulation. It is, therefore, valuable in all those cases where it is desirable to give tone and strength to the system, without, at the same time, causing too great an action of the heart and blood vessels, as, during convalescence from pleurisy, pneumonia, acute hepatitis, and other inflammatory and febrile diseases.' 'Its chief property is its power of relieving irritation of the mucous surfaces, making it an admirable remedy in many gastro-intestinal, pulmonic, and urinary troubles. Like lycopus, it lessens vascular excitement, though it does not control hemorrhages like that agent. It is best adapted to chronic troubles.' 'It is also useful in hectic fever, cough, colliquative diarrhoea, some forms of irritative dyspepsia, whooping-cough, irritability of the nervous system, etc., and has been found an excellent palliative in phthisis, the syrup being employed to moderatethe cough, lessen the fever, and sustain the patient's strength. It has likewise been of service in scrofula and other diseases attended with much debility and hectic fever.' 'Wild cherry is an excellent sedative in cardiac palpitation, not due to structural wrongs. It is particularly useful in this disorder when there is nervous fever, tuberculosis, or the debility consequent upon irritative dyspepsia, anemia, chlorosis, or nervous diseases.' 'Externally, it has been found useful, in decoction, as a wash to ill-conditioned ulcers and acute ophthalmia. Dose of the powdered bark, 1 or 2 drachms; of the infusion, 1 ounce of bark to 1 pint of cold water, and allowed to stand a few hours, from 1 to 4 fluid ounces, 4 or 5 times a day, and which is the best mode of using it; syrup of wild cherry, 1 fluid drachm. This agent may be used as a vehicle for Fowler's solution and other medicines. Specific prunus, 1 to 20 drops.' This is Frontier's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. Mung bean sprouts are the distinctive plump silver sprouts with two yellowish 'horns' at one end and a scraggly tail. In most instances, when a recipe calls for bean sprouts, they are talking about mung bean sprouts, from these, whole green mung beans. Forboth nutrition and safety, sprouts need to be fresh. They will not keep long - about 4 days in the refrigerator, maximum. Fresh bean sprouts are extremely nutritious. Both the texture and taste of mung bean sprouts - crunchy with a delicate hint of sweetness - enhances a number of popular Chinese dishes, from Egg Rolls to stir-fries and salads. In The Oxford Companion to Food, Alan Davidson notes that stir-frying bean sprouts releases a protein that isn't available when they are eaten raw. However, to maintain their crisp texture, they shouldn't be stir-fried for longer than about thirty seconds. Ingredients 1 package egg roll wrappers (4½ inch by 5½ inch) Filling 1 pound fresh pork (or barbecued pork) 1 medium onion (sliced) 2 stalks celery, cut diagonally ½ pound fresh mushrooms, sliced 6 water chestnuts (fresh if possible), sliced ½ pound suey choy, sliced thinly, 1 inch lengthwise 2 green onions, diced 1 pound fresh bean sprouts Pork Seasonings 1 teaspoon soy sauce 1 teaspoon oyster sauce salt and pepper to taste a bit (less than 1 teaspoon) cornstarch Gravy Mixture 4 tablespoons water 1 tablespoon cornstarch ½ teaspoon soy sauce 2 teaspoons oyster sauce salt, pepper, accent (if desired) to taste 2 tablespoons cornstarch mixed with 2 teaspoons cold water* Oil for stir-frying 2 to 4 cups oil for deep-frying Directions Mix seasoning ingredients together. Cut the pork into thin strips, add the seasonings and marinate the pork for between 10 and 15 minutes. While the pork is marinating, prepare the vegetables, and the gravy mixture. Heat wok and add oil. When oil is ready, add the celery and onion and stir-fry. |
