Smudge Sticks or Smudge Bundles are all-natural ceremonial incense traditionally burned in Native American rituals such as sweat lodges. Increasingly, doctors, therapists, and body workers are discovering the beneficial aspects of these herbs. Original Smudge is Desert Sage and Cedar. Not only good for keeping pesky flying insects away certain plant smokes (smudges) could preserve food and hides. Some smudges could also impart protection from unseen spirits and thoughts. To apply the protective cleansing power of a smudge a leaf or resin was heated to make smoke that was brushed over the person or object often with a feather fan. Some plant smokes had specific healing properties while others more generic powers. The smudge smoke is made either by spreading dry herbs on hot coals or hot rocks or igniting dry herbs in a clay bowl or shell. Desert sagebrush covers much of the high plateau of the western states and is expanding its range. Sagebrush bark has provided fiber for footwear and clothing to the Fremont culture. Sagebrush grows a protective cover for rabbits and small game, improving their habitat. With its many variations and names, Big Sage Brush, Mountain Ball Sage (Artemesia frigida), Sweet Sage (Artemesia dracunculoderes), Black Sage (Artemesia nova) as well as all its common tribal names, sage is a respected plant family. Desert sage grows on the high desert of the West. It is traditionally used in ceremonies and included in medicine pouches and bundles. Sage is burned in smudging ceremonies to drive out bad spirits, feelings or influences. The leaves are valued for their aromatic properties and areused as a natural moth repellent. Sage can be used in numerous ways. Native Americans of the Plains Nations cover the floor of their sweat lodges with sage. They will also breathe through a small bundle of sage and at times rub the bundle on their bodies while in the sweat lodge. Some tribes commonly wrapped their pipes in sage before they bundled them up. They believed that objects wrapped in sage were purified. Sage wreaths are still placed around Sundancer’s heads, wrists and ankles during the ceremony. ''Sage makes the bad spirits sick. They go away from it when it is burned. It does not make the good spirits sick. They will not leave when it is smoked. Sweet grass is pleasant to all the spirits. Good spirits like it. Bad spirits like it. All like it. The smoke of sweet grass is pleasant to the good spirits. They come to the smoke. They are pleased with one who makes this smoke. They will listen to what such a one asks. But the bad spirits come also to enjoy the smoke. So, sage must be burned to make them sick. Then, sweet grass to bring good spirits.'' Traditional stories and myths tell of the power of sage in that wherever sage is present negative forces cannot enter. In the Inipi ceremony, a sprig of sage is worn behind the right ear to protect the participant and placate the little people. |

It's made by pulverizing the ground, dried residue of corn grains after preparatory soaking and the removal of the embryo and the outer covering. It’s also a great body talc – far superior to mineral talcum powders. The American Cancer Society and National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, among others, are recommending that women use cornstarch powders, rather than talcum powders, in the genital area. 'Talcum Powder and Cancer' from the ACS states: 'Until additional information is available, women may wish to consider avoiding these products or substituting cornstarch-based powders that contain no talc.' When asked why cornstarch is safer to use than talc, Dr. Whysner explains, 'Cornstarch is the way that the corn plant stores energy. It's also the starch that is used in food products, and the body can digest cornstarch. Talc, on the other hand, is a mineral. It's mined from the earth, and the body has a difficult time removing it.' Dr. Pennisi adds, 'Since cornstarch is derived from corn and that's a food,our body has natural enzymes to break it down rather easily, whereas talc, which is a mineral and not normally found in the body, cannot be broken down by the body.' The American Health Foundation paper, he adds, says essentially three things: 1) Unlike talc, cornstarch feminine powders have never been associated with ovarian cancer. 2) By the very nature of cornstarch, any association with ovarian cancer is not biologically plausible. 3) Cornstarch is a safe alternative to talc in feminine powders. |

According to Ayurvedic tradition, Vacha is a 'sattvic' herb which feeds and transmutes the sexual 'kundalini' energy. Calamus has been called called 'the closest thing to a sex stimulant that nature has to offer.' It is a stimulating nervine antispasmodic, and a general tonic to the mind. As a rejuvenative for the brain and nervous system, it is used to promote cerebral circulation, to stimulate self-expression, and to help manage a wide range of symptoms in the head, including neuralgia, epilepsy, memory loss and shock. In many cases involving the sinuses or shock, the powdered root is taken nasally. The Cree say that they can take Calamus root and 'travel great distances without touching the ground'. Active constituents: Monoterpene hydrocarbons, sequestrine ketones, (trans- or Alpha) Asarone (2,4,5-trimethoxy-1-propenylbenzene), and Beta-asarone (cis- isomer) contained in the roots essential oils. It is used in the Phillipines for rheumatism and memory problems. In Korea, it is an ingredient in a type of moonshine called Immortals' Booze. Research in China has shown the essential oil in this rhizome to be sedating and neuroprotectant. Sweet flag, more accurately Acorus gramineus, Japanese Sweet Flag, has been used in Asia for at least the last 2000 years for a number of beneficial reasons. The ancient Chinese used it to lessen swelling and for constipation. The Indian variety is Acorus calamus. In India, Ayurvedic medicinal practice has used the magical root to cure fevers, for asthma and bronchitis, and as an all around sedative. Acorus calamus root was also used by the ancient Greeks and included in the traditional remedies of many other European cultures. During the middle ages calamus was an admixture in several of the ancient, psychoactive, 'witches flying ointments', often being mixed with solanacious herbs. The root was also well-known in Biblical times and mentioned in Exodus 30: 22-25 as one of the ingredients of the 'holy anointing oil'. TheCree Indians of Northern Alberta use calamus for a number of medicinal reasons including: as an analgesic for the relief of toothache or headache, for oral hygiene to cleanse and disinfect the teeth, the fight the effects of exhaustion or fatigue, and to help cure/prevent a hangover. Other Native tribes used it to treat a cough, made a decoction as a carminative and as an infusion for cholic. The Sioux used the whole plant, making aromatic garlands from the leaves and using the root as a tea for bowel pains, or rubbed the chewed root on the skin for a general illness cure. Calamus was also known to many early American settlers and used for a number of folk remedies. Walt Whitman even wrote poetry about his beloved herb in 'Leaves of Grass'.
