All Frontier Bottled Spices are freshness dated, non-irradiated, safety sealed and feature a convenient shaker top for easy use. Used as an infusion, extract, tincture, poultice – and spice. Red Sage is a versatile gourmet spice. It is a favorite Italian meat and poultry flavoring, and is also used in rich, butter-based pasta sauces. Sage is an overpowering, somewhat bitter spice – useful for strong barbeque-type seasonings. Medicinally, Red Sage tea has traditionally been used for inflammations of the mouth, throat and tonsils, its volatile oils soothing the mucous membranes. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Sage leaf for 'External: Inflammations of the mucous membranes of nose and throat. Internal:Dyspeptic symptoms, excessive perspiration.' 'Principal components of the essential oil, in addition to thujone, are cineol and camphor. In addition, the leaves contain tannins, diterpene bitter principles, triterpenes, steroids, flavones, and flavonoid glycosides.' 'Dosage: Internal: Daily dosage: 4 - 6 g of herb; 0.1 - 0.3 g of essential oil*; 2.5 - 7.5 g of tincture (according to Erg. B. 6); 1.5 - 3 g fluidextract (according to Erg. B. 6). For gargles and rinses: 2.5 g of herb or 2 - 3 drops of essential oil in 100 ml of water as infusion or 5 g of alcoholic extract in 1 glass water. External: Undiluted alcohol extract. 'Mode of Administration: Cut herb for infusions, alcoholic extracts and distillates for gargles, rinses and other topical applications, as well as for internal use. Also pressed juice of fresh plants. 'Actions: Antibacterial; Fungistatic; Virustatic; Astringent; Secretion-promoing; Perspiration-inhibiting.' *Essential oils must be used experimentally at first, in very small quanitites, to assure that there are no adverse reactions. It is very easy to overdose with these highly concentrated oils, and allergic reactions are possible. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Stimulant, astringent, tonic and carminative. Has been used in dyspepsia, but is now mostly employed as a condiment.' 'In the United States, where it is still an official medicine, it is in some repute, especially in the form of an infusion, the principal and most valued application of which isas a wash for the cure of affections of the mouth and as a gargle in inflamed sore throat, being excellent for relaxed throat and tonsils, and also for ulcerated throat. The gargle is useful for bleeding gums and to prevent an excessive flow of saliva.' 'When a more stimulating effect to the throat is desirable, the gargle may be made of equal quantities of vinegar and water, ½ pint of hot malt vinegar being poured on 1 oz. of leaves, adding ½ pint of cold water.' 'The infusion when made for internal use is termed Sage Tea, and can be made simply by pouring 1 pint of boiling water on to 1 oz. of the dried herb, the dose being from a wineglassful to half a teacupful, |

Also known as Palma Christi. Castor herb, Castor oil and Castor bean have been used therapeutically in ancient India, China, Persia, Egypt, Africa, Greece, Rome, the Americas, and Europe. A poultice of the oil-rich castor leaves is useful as an external application to boils & swellings and other skin irritations. As Grieve points out, ''The fresh leaves are used by nursing mothers in the Canary Islands as an external application, to increase the flow of milk.'' Ayurvedic tradition uses a poultice of the leaves, sometimes heated, for joint pain. The leaves are taken internally as an aid to digestion. In India, small quantities of castor seed are used in the villages as a mild laxative for children. The seeds made into a paste or poultice are reported to be applied to sores, boils and gouty or rheumatic swellings. The oil, expressed from the seeds, is used as an emollient and skin softener, treatment of gastrointestinal problems, lacerations, and other skin disorders such as psoriasis. It is also found in many skin care products. One way it is used is to treat skin problems is to make a hot oil pad by pouring the castor oil on an absorbent material placed over the treatment area and then heating the pad to heat the castor oil. Taken internally, Castor Oil and Castor bean is used as a treatment for constipation, intestinal inflammation and worms. Castor Oil has been used as a laxative since antiquity. It's mentioned by the ancient Greek historian Herodotus, and beans from the Castor plant have been found in Egyptian tombs. Castor Oil's laxative effect stems from its ability to prevent absorption of liquids from the intestinal tract. Don't take Castor Oil or bean if you have nausea, vomiting, an intestinal blockage, appendicitis, severe inflammatory intestinal disease, or any abdominal pain of unknown origin. Not recommended for pregnant and nursing women and children under 12. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': Castor Oil is regarded as one of the most valuable laxatives in medicine. It is of special service in temporary constipation and wherever a mild action is essential, and is extremely useful for children and the aged. It is used in cases of colic and acute diarrhoea due to slow digestion, but must not be employed in cases of chronic constipation, which it only aggravates whilst relieving the symptoms. It acts in about five hours, affecting the entire length of the bowel, but not increasing the flow of bile, except in very large doses. Themode of its action is unknown. The oil will purge when rubbed into the skin, or injected. It is also used for expelling worms, after other special remedies have been administered. The only serious objections to the use of Castor Oil are its flavour and the sickness often produced by it. The nauseous taste may be disguised by administering it covered by Lemon oil, Sassafras oil and other essential oils, or floating on Peppermint or Cinnamon water, or coffee, or shaken up with glycerine, or given |

This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as a decoction and food additive. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'It contains a large amount of mucilage with the presence of a big percentage of sulphur compounds. Demulcent, emollient, nutritive.' 'A popular remedy made into a jelly for pulmonary complaints and kidney and bladder affections. Can be combined with cocoa. The decoction is made by steeping ½ oz. of the Moss in cold water for 15 minutes and then boiling it in 3 pints of milk or water for 10 or 15 minutes, after which it is strained and seasoned with liquorice, lemon or cinnamon and sweetened to taste. It can be taken freely.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'A decoction of Irish moss, with water or milk, is very nutritious, and may be used as a demulcent in chronic affections of the air passages, chronic diarrhoea and dysentery, scrofula, rickets, enlargedmesenteric glands, irritation of the bladder and kidneys, etc.' 'As a culinary article it may be employed in the preparation of jellies, white soup, blanc mange, etc. The decoction is prepared as follows: Macerate ½ ounce of carrageen in cold or warm water, during 10 minutes; then boil in 3 pints of water, or milk if stronger nourishment is desired, for a quarter of an hour. Strain through linen. Sugar, lemon-juice, tincture of orange-peel, essence of lemon, or other aromatics, as cinnamon or nutmeg, may be employed as flavoring ingredients.' |
