This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as an infusion, decoction, extract and tincture. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Chaste tree fruit for 'Irregularities of the menstrual cycle. Premenstrual complaints. Mastodynia [breast pain].' 'Daily dosage: aqueous-alcoholic extracts corresponding to 30 - 40 mg of the drug. Mode of Administration: Aqueous-alcoholic extracts (50 - 70 percent v/v) from the crushed fruits taken as liquid or dry extract.' Chaste tree fruit contains iridoid glycosides, flavonoids, and terpenoids. Clinical trials have shown significant reduction of the whole range of PMS symptoms resulting from prolonged use of Chaste tree berry extract, from irritability and headaches to cramping and breast pain. Other trials have shown genuine effectiveness for women suffering from infertility and irregular periods. Grieve's calssic 'A Modern Herbal': '...the berries somewhat like peppercorns, dark purple, halfcovered by their sage-green calyxes, yellowish within, hard, having an aromatic odour; taste warm, peculiar. The seeds were once held in repute for securing chastity, and the Athenian matrons in the sacred rites of Ceres used to string their couches with the leaves.' 'The fresh ripe berries are pounded to a pulp and used in the form of a tincture for the relief of paralysis, pains in the limbs, weakness, etc.' Chaste Tree Berries are ancient in European tradition for hemorrhage following childbirth and menstrual regulation, discussed at length by Hippocrates, Dioscorides and Theophrastus. Contemporary research supports these ancient physicians, showing that the whole fruit is medicinally active. Vitex causes the pituitary gland to produce luteinizing hormone. This increases progesterone production and helps regulate a woman's cycle, re-establishing the normal balance between estrogen and progesterone. The underproduction of progesterone can cause PMS and other related problems. This glandular balancing can be profoundly helpful during menopause. Vitex also keeps prolactin secretion in check. The ability to decrease mildly elevated prolactin levels may benefit some infertile women as well as some women with premenstrual syndrome. A double-blind study, confirming other studies, showed Vitex to be more effective than vitamin B6 in controlling PMS symptoms. This is not a fast acting remedy, and will not give immediate symptomatic relief. Goldenseal is a broad spectrum antibiotic and fungicide, effective against a wide range of topical and internal infections of the respiratory, digestive, and urinary tracts. Its use by Native America was widespread. It was used topically for skin and eye infections, as a mouthwash for canker sores, and as a tea for diarrhea, upper respiratory and vaginal infections. It was also used as a yellow dye for skins and fabrics. The two primary alkaloids in goldenseal are hydrastine and berberine, along with smaller amounts of canadine. They have demonstrated antimicrobial effects against a wide range of bacteria, protozoa, and fungi, including Chlamydia species, E. coli, Salmonella typhi, Candida albicans and Entamoeba histolytica. Herbalists often recommend Goldenseal topically for its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic actions, which make it useful to clean wounds, reduce hemorrhoids, soothe canker sores, and alleviate skin infections (including ringworm and athlete's foot). It can also help treat eye infections such as conjunctivitis and blepharitis. The tea is recommended for colds. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The American aborigines valued the root highly as a tonic, stomachic and application for sore eyes and general ulceration, as well as a yellow dye for their clothing and weapons.' 'It is official in most Pharmacopoeias, several of which refer to its yellowing the saliva when masticated.' 'The action is tonic, laxative, alterative and detergent. It is a valuable remedy in the disordered conditions of the digestion and has a special action on the mucous membrane, making it of value as a local remedy in various forms of catarrh. In chronic inflammation of the colon and rectum, injections of Hydrastine are often of great service, and it has been used in haemorrhoids with excellent results, the alkaloid Hydrastine having an astringent action. The powder hasproved useful as a snuff for nasal catarrh.' 'It is employed in dyspepsia, gastric catarrh, loss of appetite and liver troubles. As a tonic, it is of extreme value in cases of habitual constipation, given as a powder, combined with any aromatic. It is an efficient remedy for sickness and vomiting.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'It is a well-known fact, though often overlooked by those who wish to make it appear that the alkaloidal constituents of a plant are alone the valuable and active therapeutic factors, that the combination or association of principles formed naturally in the plant, or held together naturally even when derived from the plant, more completely represents the crude drug than do the isolated and forcibly separated alkaloids, and that medicinal virtues are possessed by the former that can not be even approximated by the latter. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Hawthorn leaf and flower for 'Decreasing cardiac output as described in functional Stage II of NYHA [New York Heart Assoc. clinical definition]. 'Special Caution for Use: A physician must be consulted in cases where symptoms continue unchanged for longer than six weeks or in case of swelling of the legs. Medical diagnosis is absolutely necessary when pains occur in the region of the heart, spreading out to the arms, upper abdomen or the area around the neck, or in cases of respiratory distress (dyspnea).' 'Dosage and Administration: 160 - 900 mg native, water-ethanol extract (ethanol 45 percent v/v or methanol 70 percent v/v, drug-extract ratio = 4 - 7:1, with defined flavonoid or procyanidin content), corresponding to 30 - 168.7 mg procyanidins, calculated as epicatechin, or 3.5 - 19.8 mg flavonoids, calculated as hyperoside in accordance with DAB 10, in two or three individual doses. Hawthorn fluidextract DAB 10: Equivalent individual or daily dosage must be confirmed by clinical-pharmacological experiment or clinical study. Mode of Administration: Liquid or dry pharmaceutical forms, for oral intake. Duration of Administration: 6 weeks minimum.' Hawthorn has a long history in both folk medicine and clinical medicine as a heart tonic. The herb is typically used to improve cardiovascular function, as it increases the supply of blood to the heart muscle, resulting in enhanced circulation throughout the body. It has been shown to help stabilize angina pectoris, as well as aiding recovery from heart attacks. The leaves, flowers, and berries of hawthorn contain a variety of bioflavonoid-likecomplexes that appear to be primarily responsible for the cardiac actions of the plant. Hawthorn seems to inhibit angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) and reduce production of the potent blood vessel-constricting substance angiotensin II. Hawthorn thus reduces resistance in arteries and improves extremity circulation. The bioflavonoids in hawthorn are potent antioxidants. Numerous double-blind clinical trials have confirmed hawthorn is beneficial for persons with serious heart conditions. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Cardiac, diuretic, astringent, tonic. Mainly used as a cardiac tonic in organic and functional heart troubles. Both flowers and berries are astringent and useful in decoction to cure sore throats.
