Traditionally used as a tea, decoction and extract. Inula is an Ayurvedic herb. It grows in the hilly regions in the northwestern Himalayas. Approximately 80 percent experienced dyspnea (abnormal or uncomfortable breathing, usually associated with heart trouble), and all 200 subjects had chest pain, with positive indications of myocardial ischemia. Guggul (Commiphora) is known for its lipid-lowering qualities. It may partially explain the lowering of total cholesterol by 39-percent in these patients. There was also a 51-percent decrease in triglycerides and 32-percent decrease in total blood lipids. The other results were also equally remarkable. At the end of the six-month study period, 26 percent of the subjects had a complete restoration of normal ECG. Another 59 percent showed improvement in the ECG. Twenty-five percent of the subjects had no chest pain, and patients experiencing dyspnea fell from 80 percent at the beginning of the study to 32 percent. 2 In another trial, the efficacy of Inula was compared to nitroglycerin for the prevention of anginal symptoms. Nine subjects with ischemic heart disease was used in the study. All patients experienced chest pain and showed positive for myocardial ischemia by their ECG ST-segment depression on exertion. The Inula group received 3 grams root powder 90 minutes prior to testing. The controls were given nitroglycerin. All nine subjects had improvement in ST-segment depression on ECG. Herbal extracts are a highly effective way to administer herbs. They are very concentrated, they work faster than teas and are four to eight times stronger than capsules. Extracts are easily digestible and quickly assimilated into the system. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Echinacea pallida [Echinacea angustifolia] root for 'Supportive therapy for influenza-like infections.' 'Daily dosage: Tincture (1:5) with 50 percent (v/v) ethanol from native dry extract (50 percent ethanol, 7 - 11:1), corresponding to 900 mg herb. Information for children's dosage is not available. Mode of Administration: Liquid forms for oral administration. Duration of Administration: Not longer than 8 weeks.' Echinacea possesses confirmed anitbacterial and antiviral properties. It is profoundly supportive of the immune system, and, as Dr. Ellingwood's ecstatic clinical review below indicates (only part of which is quoted here), Echinacea's therapeutic power amazed practitioners. Echinacea is effective both internally, against such as colds, flu and tonsilitis, and externally against many kinds of stubborn skin problems. Red yeast extract contains a number of cholesterol-lowering compounds known as statins, among them lovastatin, the same active ingredient that's in Mevacor. Researchers have determined that one of the ingredients in red yeast rice, called monacolin K, inhibits the production of cholesterol by stopping the action of a key enzyme in the liver (e.g., HMG-CoA reductase) that is responsible for manufacturing cholesterol. The drug lovastatin (Mevacor®) acts in a similar fashion to this red yeast rice ingredient. However, the amount per volume of monacolin K in red yeast rice is small (0.2% per 5 mg) when compared to the 20–40 mg of lovastatin available as a prescription drug. This has prompted researchers to suggest that red yeast rice may have other ingredients, such as sterols, that might also contribute to lowering cholesterol. A double-blind trial at the UCLA School of Medicine determined that red yeast rice in the amount of 2.4 grams per day (approximately 10 mg total monacolins) in capsules significantly decreased total- and LDL-cholesterol levels in a sample of people with elevated cholesterol after 12 weeks of therapy. Triglycerides were also reduced in those taking red yeast rice. However, unlike the original study, HDL values did not increase substantially. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study at UCLA, a dose of 2.4 grams of red yeast rice powder per day decreased LDL-cholesterol by 18% after 8 weeks. This is Plum Flower brand's nitrogen-flushed vacuum pack. Plum Flower is one of the most distinguished herb houses in the world. Sulfur Free, Chlorine Free, Aluminum Phosphate Free. Sulfites are used to give herbs the appearance of freshness. As with dried fruit. un-sulfured herbs look different than those that are adulterated with preservatives.
