pH meters should be calibrated frequently (every 1-4 weeks, depending on use). Two-point calibration (using both 4.0 & 7.0 buffers) ensures the most accurate calibration possible. Do not reuse calibration solution, as once it has been used, it is no longer sterile. Pour a small amount into a shot glass and discard after use. Suitable for all makes and models of pH pens and meters. pH Calibration Solution is available in single-use sachets, as well as 230 ml (approx. 8 ounces.), quart and gallon bottles. We also offer a twin-pack containing one 8 ounce bottle each of both 4.01 and 7.01 calibration solution. This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as a decoction, extract, tincture and ointment. Also called Mountain Grape. Oregon grape root is helpful with systemic skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. Grape Root ointment has been clinically shown to be very helpful with psoriasis. Native Americans have long used a decoction made from the root to treat many other health problems. Oregon Grape has a proven strong bactericidal effect. Alkaloids, including berbamine, canadine, hydrastine, and the most famous, berberine, one of the active principles in Goldenseal, account for the beneficial activity of Oregon grape root. Berberine is effective against intestinal bacteria, hence helpful with diarrhea and other bacteria-caused digestive, throat and urinary-tract problems. Oregon grape root seems to stimulate the liver and gall-bladder to normal function. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Tonic and alterative, recommended in psoriasis, syphilis and impure blood-conditions. It may be used like colombo, berberis, etc., in dyspepsia and chronic mucous complaints. In constipation it is combined with Cascara Sagrada. It improves digestion and absorption.' 'Preparation: Fluid extract, 10 to 30 drops.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Excretion and secretion are promoted by it; digestion and assimilation improved; the lymphatic glandular system and the ductless glands are stimulated; and the renal secretions somewhat augmented. Thus it acts as a blood-maker, and is therefore a remedy to oppose depraved conditions of the body-fluids.' 'As a tonic, it may be employed as a synonym of hydrastis, colombo, berberis, etc., possessing in addition its own peculiar virtues, in dyspeptic conditions, chronic mucous maladies, and in certain enfeebled conditions of the system, etc.' 'Owing to its invigorating power over the gastric functions,it is a valuable remedy for atonic dyspepsia, and more particularly if associated with hepatic torpor, for which it is also an excellent remedy. A cirrhotic liver, associated with gastro-enteritis, has been benefited by it, and for chronic constipation it is a useful agent when combined with cascara sagrada. It is said to be effectual in stomatitis.' 'Berberis aquifolium commends itself for study in certain pulmonic troubles, on account of its excellent results in controlling secretions of the mucous tract. Cases of purulent bronchorrhoea, pronounced incurable, have been cured by it, and Prof. Webster asserts that he has seen cases of phthisis recover, even where there were extensive cavities, under the use of this agent. The appetite improved, hectic subsided, expectoration became lessened, the cough milder and less frequent, and flesh and strength were augmented. The remedy should be long continued.' Old-fashioned homemade buttermilk is the slightly sour, residual liquid which remains after butter is churned, ie. milk from the butter or buttermilk. It was usually flecked with tiny spots of sweet, creamy butter that didn't quite make it to the top to be skimmed. The flavor of buttermilk is reminiscent of yogurt and most people prefer it well-chilled. You'll find it is slightly thicker in texture than regular milk but not as heavy as cream. It takes one gallon of milk to yield one-half pint of true buttermilk. Nowadays, most commercial buttermilk is made by adding a lactic acid bacteria culture to pasteurized sweet whole milk or, more commonly skim milk or non-fat milk, and it may or may not have added butter flecks. After the addition of the culture, the milk is left to ferment for 12 to 14 hours at a low temperature (optimum 69 degrees F.). It is usually labeled cultured buttermilk and may be salted or unsalted. Most commercial varieties are salted, so check the label if you are on a sodium-restricted diet. Buttermilk history In days gone by, nothing went to waste in the standard homestead, and this included the liquid leftover after churning butter. Combined with natural airborne bacteria, this liquid thickened and soured, taking on a pleasingly tangy flavor. The resulting buttermilk made an excellent addition to biscuits, pancakes, and baked goods. Buttermilk is lower in fat than regular milk, since the fat has been removed to make butter. It is also high in potassium, vitamin B12, calcium, and riboflavin as well as a good source of phosphorus. Those with digestive problems are often advised to drink buttermilk rather than milk, as it is more quickly digested. Buttermilk hasmore lactic acid than skim milk. One cup of buttermilk has 99 calories and 2.2 grams of fat, whereas whole milk has 157 calories and 8.9 grams of fat. Do check the labels as some brands of buttermilk are higher in fat than others. For those watching their caloric and/or fat intake, try putting a couple of tablespoons of buttermilk on your baked potato or in mashed potatoes in lieu of sour cream or butter. You'll get both the butter flavor and the slight tang of sour cream with a fraction of the calories. You can also make mock sour cream using buttermilk powder. In the Kitchen Buttermilk is excellent in baked goods, and also as a soup and salad dressing base. It lends a rich, hearty flavor with fewer calories than milk or cream.
