Promotes Digestive Health An annual plant, Fenugreek Seeds have been used fro centuries as a culinary spice and their extracts as flavorings. Fenugreek Seeds have a long history of folklore use as a food soothing to the stomach. Whole or ground fenugreek (foenum-graecum is Latin for 'Greek hay') is traditional in Mediterranean and Indian cooking, found in most Indian curries and chutneys. Afavourite Indian dish is 'methi aloo' or pan-fried potatoes flavoured with fenugreek. It is also a basic Indian pickling spice. Fenugreek is also sprouted and used in salads, providing an excellent source of Vitamin E. Fenugreek's steroidal saponins account for many of its beneficial effects, particularly the inhibition of cholesterol absorption and synthesis. The seeds are rich in dietary fiber, which may be the main reason they can lower blood sugar and cholersterol levels. This remarkable property has been confirmed in more than one modern study. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Fenugreek seed for 'Internal: Loss of appetite. External: As poultice for local inflammation.' 'Side Effects: Repeated external applications can result in undesirable skin reactions. 'Dosage: Internal: 6 g drug; equivalent preparations. Although there are other peppers with considerably more heat, the Cayenne is the model red pepper. The Heat Level of Cayenne Pepper is measured on the Scoville scale in 'Heat Units'. Two common ground varieties are 30M & 90M Heat Units, (30,000 & 90,000 respectively). The 30M pepper is comparable to the canned 'Red Pepper' that you find in at the Supermarket. Delicious honey-fragrant Honeybush tea (Cyclopia intermedia) wild-harvested in the mountains of the Eastern Cape in South Africa. Honeybush tea tastes like honey without the sweetness. Honeybush tea, used as an infusion or thick decoction, has very low tannin content and contains no caffeine. It is therefore especially valuable for children and patients with digestive and heart problems where stimulants and tannins should be avoided. Honeybush tea is normally consumed with milk and sugar, but to appreciate the delicate sweet taste and flavour, no milk or sugar should be added. Descriptions of the flavour vary from that of hot apricot jam, floral, honey-like and dried fruit mix with the overallimpression of sweetness. The tea has the added advantage that the cold infusion can also be used as iced tea and that it blends well with fruit juices. Honeybush tea is prepared by boiling about 4-6 g of the dried material (approximately 2-3 tablespoonfuls) per liter for 20 minutes. There are currently two distinct methods used for honeybush tea fermentation, fermentation in a curing heap and fermentation at elevated temperatures in a preheated ''baking-oven''. Research by the Department of Chemistry of the University of the Orange Free State indicated those substantial amounts of (+)-pinitol is present in Honeybush tea. Pinitol is used as an expectorant and also has anti-diabetic activity.
