Passion Flower Leaf C/S (Passiflora incarnata) 1 lb: C
This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as an infusion, decoction, tincture and smoke. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Passionflower herb for 'Nervous restlessness.' 'Daily dosage: 4 - 8 g of herb; equivalent preparations. Mode of Administration: Comminuted herb for tea and other preparations for internal use.' Passion flower acts like a sedative. It lowers blood pressure, gives relaxation and is a very mild hallucinogen. Passion flower is nature's sleeping pill, very helpful for insomnia, producing no narcotic hangover. It is an effective antispamodic, helpful with seizures, hysteria, asthma, nerve pain and Parkinson's disease. Passion flower contains harmine, harman, harmol, harmaline, harmalol, and passaflorine. For many years, plant researchers believed that the group of harmane alkaloids were the active constituents in passion flower. Recent studies, however, have pointed to the flavonoids in passion flower as the primary constituents responsible for its relaxing and antianxiety effects. The European literature involving passion flower recommends it primarily for antianxiety treatment; in this context, it is often combined with valerian, lemon balm, and other herbs with sedative properties. 'A few years ago, several friends and I boiled down about five pounds of Passiflora incarnata vines and leaves and drank the decoction. Within about 20 minutes, we all began to experience some profound behavioral shifts, all of us acting in a more 'primal' manner. We were also quite energized and 'up', with some slight distortion of colors. This very fun state lasted about three hours or so, followed by a very deep sleep in which all involved experienced quite profound dream states.' Grieve's classic 'A ModernHerbal': 'The drug is known to be a depressant to the motor side of the spinal cord, slightly reducing arterial pressure, though affecting circulation but little, while increasing the rate of respiration. It is official in homoeopathic medicine and used with bromides, it is said to be of great service in epilepsy. Its narcotic properties cause it to be used in diarrhoea and dysentery, neuralgia, sleeplessness and dysmenorrhoea.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'The clinical application of passiflora has been with most observers satisfactory. Its force is exerted chiefly upon the nervous system, the remedy finding a wide application in spasmodic disorders and as a rest-producing agent. It is best adapted to debility and does not act so well in sthenic conditions, although not contraindicated in such. It is specially useful to allay restlessness and overcome wakefulness, when these are the result of exhaustion, or the nervous excitement of debility.' 'It proves specially useful in the insomnia of infants and old people. It gives sleep to those who are laboring under the effects of mental worry or from mental overwork. It reliev

Premium Green Tea, Box of 20 foil wrap tea bags: K
In 1690 Japan was ruled by the Tokugawa Shogunate, the Manchus had repelled the Mongols, Louis XIV ruled in splendor from is new palace in Versailles, Czar Peter had just attained the throne and Johann Sebastian Bach was five years old. And that same year in Japan the Yamamoto family began producing premium teas. Today Yamamotoyama is the largest and one of the oldest family run tea companies in the world. In the early 1970s an executive of Yamamotoyama discovered an area perfect for tea production in central Brazil. This was a wonderful opportunity, as Japan had limited land to expand Yamamotoyama’s tea production. Brazil was also chosen for its season, which begins in September (which is opposite from that of Japan), its very rich and fertile soil, and perfect tea growing climate with fog and heavy dews. The best tea bushes and their seedlings were hand picked from Japan to produce the finest green teas possible. The Yamamotoyama Brazilian tea gardens are in two highland areas in central Brazil near the Atlantic Ocean, at an elevation of 2,000 to 2,500 feet above sea level. One of the gardens is 150 miles southwest of Sao Paulo, the largest city in Brazil. This area covers 950 acres with 300 acrescurrently under tea cultivation. The second garden is 250 miles south of Sao Paulo, with 415 acres and 250 acres under tea cultivation. The two gardens combined employ over 200 people and are home to many more. The tea gardens have two types of Japanese tea plants. Over 2250 tons of fresh tea leaves are produced each year which is processed to exacting Japanese standards into 450 tons of finished green tea. The tea gardens are currently in their third year of organic production and this year (2000) will become ''certified organic''. Currently more than 50% of the green tea is exported to the United States although some is sent to Japan, the Middle East and some is sold in Brazil. Stash Premium Green tea is from these Brazilian tea gardens. Our Premium Green tea is expertly processed from beautifully handled leaves and steam processed in the traditional Japanese style to preserve the flavor, fragrance, and color of the fresh leaf. The finished tea leaves are a vibrant green that brew into a bright golden-green liquor with a delicately herbaceous, slightly sweet and slightly nutty flavor. .

Reishi Mushroom Whole (Ganoderma lucidum; Ling Zhi) 1 lb: C
This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as a decoction, extract, tincture, food additive and supplement. Reishi is a traditional tonic used to nourish, tonify, and supplement the whole body as it removes toxins and disperses accumulation. It calms and nourishes the nervous system, strengthens the lungs, protectsand stimulates the liver and helps the body adapt to stress. The reishi mushroom is classified botanically as a polypore, a group of hard, woody, bracket-like mushrooms that decompose wood. Because of this hard and woody nature, reishi is not eaten, but cut into pieces and made into a thick, boiled tea, a decoction. This traditional water decoction involves boiling reishi at low temperatures for 2-6 hours. The water soluble compounds are left in the decoction and the mushroom pieces are discarded. A water decoction will contain most of the polysaccharides and some, but not all of the triterpenes. An alcoholic tincture, that is, an alcohol decoction, or, more properly, an aged alcohol soak, will contain both the water-soluble and most of the water insoluble elements. Considered among the most powerful natural healing herbs in Asia, Red Reishi was very rare and expensive to obtain until recently. Reishi is rich in active organic compounds such as polysaccharides, amino acids, proteins, triterpenes, ascorbic acid, sterols, lipids, alkaloids, a glucose, a courmarine glycoside, volatile oil, riboflavin and more. These compounds are being studied for their positive effects on the immune system, including anti-tumor activity. Asian cultures have also used Reishi, rendered in jade, as a talisman worn around the neck. Sometimes, whole dried Reishi are placed in the home to ward off evil. William B. Stavinoha & Neera Satsangi University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio: http://www.kyotan.com/lectures/lectures/Lecture4.html: Prospective and retrospectively collected data on men and women suggest that use of non steroidal antiinflammatory drugs is associated with reduced risk of Alzheimers disease. This research heightens the importance of the ancient reports where Ganoderma lucidum was praised for its effect of increasing memory and preventing forgetfulness in old age reported in Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing vol. 1 as early as 456-536 AD. Research on mice using orally or topically administered Ganoderma lucidum provides evidence that Ganoderma lucidum has anti-inflammatory activity. This pharmacological activity may provide the basis for its activity on memory in old age, although we do not know as yet that Ganoderma lucidum can enter the brain and exert antiinflammatory activity. In clinical studies Chang (1994) at Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center reported that applications of Ganoderma should be studied and considered for (1) chemoprophylaxis of cancer in individuals at high risk for developing cancer (2) adjuvent use in the prevention of metastasis or recurrence of cancer (3) palliation of cancer r

Spearmint Leaf Powder (Mentha spicata) 1 lb: C
This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Spearmint is chiefly used for culinary purposes. The properties of Spearmint oil resemble those of Peppermint, being stimulant, carminative and antispasmodic, but its effects are less powerful, and it is less used than Peppermint, though it is better adapted for children's maladies.' 'From 2 to 5 drops may be given on sugar, or from ½ to 1 teaspoonful of spirit of Spearmint, with 2 tablespoonsful of water.' 'Spearmint oil is added to many compounds on account of its carminative properties, and because its taste is pleasanter and less strong than Peppermint. A distilled water of Spearmint will relieve hiccough and flatulence as well as the giddiness of indigestion.' 'For infantile trouble generally, the sweetened infusion is an excellent remedy, and is also a pleasant beverage in fevers, inflammatory diseases, etc. Make the infusion by pouring a pint of boiling water on an ounce of the dried herb; the strained-off liquidis taken in doses of a wineglassful or less.' 'It is considered a specific in allaying nausea and vomiting and will relieve the pain of colic. A homoeopathic tincture prepared from the fresh plant in flower has been found serviceable in strangury, gravel, and as a local application in painful haemorrhoids. Its principal employment is for its febrifuge and diuretic virtues. 'Preparations and Dosages: Fluid extract, ¼ to 1 drachm. Water, B.P. and U.S.P., 4 drachms. Spirit, U.S.P., 30 drops.' 'When eaten with lamb, very finely chopped in sweetened vinegar, in the form of mint sauce, mint greatly aids the digestion, as it makes the crude, albuminous fibres of the immature meat more digestible. The volatile oil stimulates the digestive system and prevents septic changes within the intestines.' 'The fresh sprigs of mint are used to flavour green peas and also new potatoes, being boiled with them, and the powdered, dried leaves are used with pea soup and also in seasonings. On the Continent, especially in Germany, the powdered, dried mint is often used at table for dusting upon pea and bean purées, as well as on gravies.' 'A grating of mint is introduced sometimes into a potato salad, or into a fowl stuffing, and in Wales it is not unusual to boil mint with cabbage.' 'Mint Jelly can be used instead of mint sauce, in the same manner as red currant jelly. It may be made by steeping mint leaves in apple jelly, or in one of the various kinds of commercial gelatine. The jelly should be a delicate shade of green. A handful of leaves should colour and flavour about half a pint of jelly. Strain the liquid through a jelly bag to remove all particles of mint before allowing to set.' 'Mint Vinegar is made as follows: Fill a jar or bottle with young mint leaves picked from the stalks. Cover with cold vinegar and cork or cover the bottle. Infuse for 14 days, then strain off the vinegar.' 'This vinegar is sometimes employed in m
