Traditionally used as a tea, decoction or smoke. Powerfully fragrant, these small fruits smell pleasantly like concentrated black pepper. They have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for 2000 years against stomach troubles and pain. They kill Helicobacter pylori, the germ that causes stomach ulcers, and are often used against headaches. They decrease the clotting ability of the blood and are useful in improving memory, especially in Alzheimer's. They also contain Cox-2 inhibitors and so are helpful in arthritis pain. Large doses can stimulate the CNS and lead to visual disturbances and hallucinations, because they contain 5-MeO-DMT as well as other tryptamines. Herbalists consider evodia slightly toxic. They caution against long-term use and overdosage, but generally consider short-term use safe. This is Plum Flower brand's nitrogen-flushed vacuum pack. Plum Flower is one of the most distinguished herb houses in the world. Sulfur Free, Chlorine Free, Aluminum Phosphate Free. Sulfites are used to give herbs the appearance of freshness. Aswith dried fruit. un-sulfured herbs look different than those that are adulterated with preservatives. Herbs that are preservative free are more natural looking and are generally darker. The nitrogen process combined with the lack of sulfur treatment inhibits the growth of anaerobic organisms, resulting in safer, higher quality herbs. After opening, store in a cool dry place. It can be found on the Atlantic coasts of Scotland and Ireland, Greenland, northern France and the Saint-Laurence estuary. It is an ancient cattle feed and famine food. Shaped like the palm of a hand, it has the texture of thin rubber. It is commonly dried and eaten raw by North Atlantic fishermen; the flavour becomes evident after prolonged chewing. Dulse is also eaten with fish and butter, boiled with milk and rye flour, or as a relish. The gelatinous substance contained in dulse is a thickening agent and imparts a reddish colour to the food with which it is mixed. In Scotland, Ireland and Iceland it is known as Söl. It is blended into milk drinks, lemon flavoured oils, jellies or just sugar coated, like breakfast cereal. Flour is also made from it. Throughout northern North America, Dulse is appreciated as a beer appetizer. This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as an infusion, decoction, extract, food additive and encapsulated supplement. Bladderwrack is widely used commercially as a thickening agent in foods and pharmaceuticals. Kloss, author of 'Back to Eden,' describes the medicinal properties of bladderwrack thus: 'The best remedy for obesity. Good for all glandular afflictions, goiter, and scrofula. Has an excellent effect on the kidneys.' Grieve, below, recommends it both internally and externally for rheumatic pain as well. Bladderwrack contains relatively large amounts of iodine, which is necessary for normal thyroid function. Current scientific studies of bladderwrack, of which there are quite a few, indicate that the high fucoidan content of this plant, because of its verified immune and inflammatory balancing effects, appears to be responsible for some of the observed beneficial optimizing of thyroid function. Bladderwrack also contains alginic acid, a dietary fiber which relieves constipation and diarrhea. The antacid Gaviscon®, composed of magnesium carbonate and sodium alginate, the sodium salt of alginic acid, has been shown to be effective relief for heartburn. Test tube and animal studies have shown alginic acid to help heal wounds, lower the unwelcome LDL cholesterol level, and have antiviural and antibacterial action in the body. Similar studies have shown Bladderwrack's other major element, fucoidan, to have similar effects. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'It has alterative properties, has been used in scrofula, and is thought by some authorities to reduce obesity through stimulating the thyroid gland.' 'The charcoal derived from Kelp has been used in the treatmentof goitre and scrofulous swellings under the name of Æthiops vegetabilis or vegetable ethiops, introduced by Dr. Russell in 1750, who also used a jelly for similar purposes, both internally and externally. He was also successful in dispersing scrofulous tumours by rubbing in the mucus of the vesicles of Bladderwrack, afterwards washing the parts with sea-water. The charcoal was also helpful in goitre. The iodine from other sources led to the neglect of kelp products.' 'In 1862 Dr. Duchesne-Duparc found while experimenting in cases of chronic psoriasis, that weight was reduced without injuring health, and used the drug with success for the latter purpose. Dr. Godfroy experimented on himself, losing five and a quarter pounds in a week after taking before three meals a day an extract made into pills containing 25 grams (3.75 grains). The bromine and iodine stimulated the absorbent glands to increased activity, without causing an atrophied wasting of the glands. Later experiments of Hunt and Seidell indicated that the result is brought about by stimulation of the thyroid gland.' This is Frontier's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. Used as a decoction, extract and tincture. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends White Willow Bark for 'Diseases accompanied by fever, rheumatic ailments, headaches.' Average daily dosage corresponding to 60 - 120 mg total salicin. Mode of Administration: Liquid and solid preparations for internal use. Note: Combinations with diaphoretic drugs could be considered. Actions: Antipyretic; Antiphlogistic; Analgesic.' Willow bark is official in the German Pharmacopeia. In Germanpediatric medicine, willow bark is used as an antipyretic component of various herbal preparations, particularly in combination with diaphoretic herbs. The British Herbal Compendium and the European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy concur with the judgement of the German Commission E. Willow barks of several different species have traditionally been used by Native Americans from Florida to Canada for pain relief. The glycoside salicin, from which the body manufactures salicylic acid, is the basis of the anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects of willow. Natural salicylic acid is reported to produce fewer side effects than the synthetic acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), and, although initially slower acting, seems to be more long-lasting. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Tonic, antiperiodic and astringent. It has been used in dyspepsia connected with debility of the digestive organs. In convalescence from acute diseases, in worms, in chronic diarrhoea and dysentery, its tonic and astringent combination renders it very useful.' 'Dosages: 1 drachm of the powdered root. 1 or 2 fluid ounces of the decoction.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Willow bark is tonic, antiperiodic, and an astringent bitter. It has been given in intermittents, dyspepsia, connected with debility of the digestive organs, passive hemorrhages, chronic mucous discharges, in convalescence from acute diseases, and in worms. Although occasionally substituted for the cinchona bark, it is inferior in activity.' 'In chronic diarrhoea and dysentery, the tonic and astringent combination of the willow renders it very eligible. It may be given in substance, in doses of 1 drachm of the powder, repeated as indicated; or of the decoction, 1 or 2 fluid ounces, 4 or 5 times a day. The decoction has also proved efficient as a local application to foul and indolent ulcers.' American Materia Medica, 1919 (Ellingwood): 'This to an extent is antimalarial and like the other agents of this class it improves the tone of the gastro-intestinal tract and the glandular organs. It corrects impaired conditions of all mucous membranes and is thus of value in excessive catarrhal discharges from these membranes, being freely given in bronchorrhea, gastric catarrh, catarrhal diarrhea and in leucorrhea, in all cases act |
