Herbal extracts are a highly effective way to administer herbs. They are very concentrated, they work faster than teas and are four to eight times stronger than capsules. Extracts are easily digestible and quickly assimilated into the system. Stevia is also known as Sweetleaf or Candyleaf. Stevia is a safe, all-natural alternative to artificial sweeteners and refined sugar in the diet. It has neither calories nor carbohydrates, is suitable for diabetics, doesn't cause tooth decay, and has been shown to reduce hypertension. Stevia has been used for centuries by the Guarani Indians of Paraguay both as a sweetener and as medicine. Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni was popularized, and named, by Dr. Moises Santiago Bertoni, the director of the College of Agriculture in Asuncion. He first heard of the herb in 1887, and encountered a live plant for the first time in 1903. In 1908 the first stevia crop was harvested, and plantations began to spring up. A 1913 memo from the official public scientific laboratory in Hamburg, Germany warned the established sugar industry, 'specimens received are of the well-known plant which alarmed sugar producers some years ago.' In 1960s Japan, there was a popular movement against adding chemicals such as artificial sweeteners to food. Manufacturers there were on the lookout for a natural alternative to sugar, and Stevia was introduced to the Japanese market in 1970. It is currently used in many products there and makes up 40% of the Japanese sweetenermarket. The Japanese use it in sugar-free versions of Wrigley's gums and diet Coke. Stevia is about 300 times sweeter than sugar in its natural state, and much more so when processed. Its medicinal uses include regulating blood sugar, preventing hypertension, treatment of skin disorders, and prevention of tooth decay. Other studies show that it is a natural antibacterial and antiviral agent as well. Stevia is actually good for you! Recently there have been studies linking stevia extract with normalization of blood sugar and insulin in diabetics. In China Stevia and stevioside is used in herbal medicines and toothpaste. In China, Korea and Japan Stevia extract Stevioside is used as a table top sweetener because it has 0 calories, 0 carbohydrates, 0 fat and is many times sweeter than sugar. Stevia has no fat, no carbohydrates, making it perfect for diabetics, low-carb diets, and people with candida. It has undergone dozens of tests world-wide and was found to be free of toxins. As a real threat to the vast sugar-aspartame industry, Stevia continues to be highly politicized in the US. While no one in Japan has complained about any Stevia related health problems for the past thirty years, over 75% of food-additive related complaints in the US are about Aspartame, which is supposedly safe. In 1995, the FDA, balancing public pressure with industry pressure, approved Stevia as a 'nutritional supplement' but not as a sweetener in the United States. Like other natural sweet |

Red Sage is a versatile gourmet spice. It is a favorite Italian meat and poultry flavoring, and is also used in rich, butter-based pasta sauces. Sage is an overpowering, somewhat bitter spice – useful for strong barbeque-type seasonings. Medicinally, Red Sage tea has traditionally been used for inflammations of the mouth, throat and tonsils, its volatile oils soothing the mucous membranes. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Sage leaf for 'External: Inflammations of the mucous membranes of nose and throat. Internal:Dyspeptic symptoms, excessive perspiration.' 'Principal components of the essential oil, in addition to thujone, are cineol and camphor. In addition, the leaves contain tannins, diterpene bitter principles, triterpenes, steroids, flavones, and flavonoid glycosides.' 'Dosage: Internal: Daily dosage: 4 - 6 g of herb; 0.1 - 0.3 g of essential oil*; 2.5 - 7.5 g of tincture (according to Erg. B. 6); 1.5 - 3 g fluidextract (according to Erg. B. 6). For gargles and rinses: 2.5 g of herb or 2 - 3 drops of essential oil in 100 ml of water as infusion or 5 g of alcoholic extract in 1 glass water. External: Undiluted alcohol extract. 'Mode of Administration: Cut herb for infusions, alcoholic extracts and distillates for gargles, rinses and other topical applications, as well as for internal use. Also pressed juice offresh plants. 'Actions: Antibacterial; Fungistatic; Virustatic; Astringent; Secretion-promoing; Perspiration-inhibiting.' *Essential oils must be used experimentally at first, in very small quanitites, to assure that there are no adverse reactions. It is very easy to overdose with these highly concentrated oils, and allergic reactions are possible. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Stimulant, astringent, tonic and carminative. Has been used in dyspepsia, but is now mostly employed as a condiment.' 'In the United States, where it is still an official medicine, it is in some repute, especially in the form of an infusion, the principal and most valued application of which is as a wash for the cure of affections of the mouth and as a gargle in inflamed sore throat, being excellent for relaxed throat and tonsils, and also for ulcerated throat. The gargle is useful for bleeding gums and to prevent an excessive flow of saliva.' 'When a more stimulating effect to the throat is desirable, the gargle may be made of equal quantities of vinegar and water, ½ pint of hot malt vinegar being poured on 1 oz. of leaves, adding ½ pint of cold water.' 'The infusion when made for internal use is termed Sage Tea, and can be made simply by pouring 1 pint of boiling water on to 1 oz. of the dried herb, the dose being from a wineglassful to half a teacupful, as often as required, |
