This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as a decoction, extract and tincture. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Milk Thistle ripe seed: 'The drug contains silibinin, silydianin, and silychristin. Uses: Crude drug: Dyspeptic complaints. Formulations [an extract standardized to at least 70 percent silymarin, the collective name for the three compounds listed]: Toxic liver damage; for supportive treatment in chronic inflammatory liver disease and hepatic cirrhosis.' 'Average daily dose of drug: 12 - 15 g; Formulations equivalent to 200 - 400 mg of silymarin, calculated as silibinin. Mode of Administration: Powdered drug for making infusions and other galenical formulations to be taken by mouth.' 'Actions: Silymarinacts as an antagonist in many experimental liver-damage models: phalloidin and -amanitin (death-cap toxins), lanthanides, carbon tetrachloride, galactosamine, thioacetamide, and the hepatotoxic virus FV3 of cold-blooded vertebrates. The therapeutic activity of silymarin is based on two sites or mechanisms of action: (a) it alters the structure of the outer cell membrane of the hepatocytes in such a way as to prevent penetration of the liver toxin into the interior of the cell; (b) it stimulates the action of nucleolar polymerase A, resulting in an increase in ribosomal protein synthesis, and thus stimulates the regenerative ability of the liver and the formation of new hepatocytes.' Milk thistle is believed to protect the cells of the liver by blocking the entrance of harmful toxins and helping to remove these toxins from the liver cells. Milk thistle seeds contain a bioflavonoid complex known as silymarin. As with other bioflavonoids, silymarin is a powerful antioxidant. Milk thistle also regenerates injured liver cells. Milk thistle extract is most commonly recommended to counteract the harmful actions of alcohol on the liver. Long-term placebo-controlled, double blind studies have shown milk thistle extracts to be effective in patients with liver cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis, and even diabetes due to cirrhosis. Milk thistle alters bile makeup, thereby potentially reducing risk of gallstones. Since silymarin is not very soluble in water, a strong boiled decoction of the ground seeds is most effective, rather than a weak infusion (tea). More effective yet is the standardized extract. A recent case report of chronic infection by hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus demonstrated potential efficacy of treatment with milk thistle (10 g ground-up seeds in oatmeal with standardized (70%) milk thistle extract capsules three times daily) in combination with another herb known for its hepatoprotectant activity, Phyllanthus amarus (200 mg, three times daily). MSM is also called 'organic sulfur,' naturally occurring sulfur. You find it in rain -- and in all plants and animals. It is widely used around the world for relief of pain from arthritis, back pain or muscle pain. There is no known toxic level of usage. In its purified chemical form, it is an odorless, essentially tasteless, white, water soluble crystalline solid. It is one of the least toxic substances in biology, similar in toxicity to water. MSM is a relative to dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), a unique therapeutic agent used worldwide in the treatment of manypainful and inflammatory conditions. Native to Mediterranean countries and southeastern Europe, dill is now widely cultivated in Europe, India, and North America. The entire plant is aromatic, and the small stems and immature umbels are used for flavouring soups, salads, sauces, fish, sandwich fillings, and particularly pickles. Dill has a warm, slightly sharp flavour somewhat reminiscent of caraway. The whole seeds and the seed oil have carminative properties and have been used in treating flatulent colic. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The leaves added to fish, or mixed with pickled cucumbers give them a spicy taste.' 'Dill vinegar, however, forms a popular household condiment. This is Plum Flower brand's nitrogen-flushed vacuum pack. Used as an infusion, decoction, extract and tincture. Corydalis is a relative of the opium poppy that contains similar pain-killing alkaloids, but which are non-addictive as well as analgesic. This herb is traditionally combined with the Peony and Licorice (Shaoyao Gancao Tang), in equal amounts, to make the basic formula for treating spastic pain – also combined with Coptis and Evodia, and the traditional Pteropus and Bulrush (Shixiao San), used for abdominal pain, menstrual pain, and pain due to injuries. The tuber contains more than 20 active alkaloids, the most active of which are the cordalines, tetrahydropalmatine (THP), and protopine. The alkaloids provide the herb with an analgesic effect that is about 1/10 of the strength of opium or 1/100 of the strength of morphine. The mechanism for its analgesic effect is similar to that of morphine, inhibiting the reticular-activating system in the brain stem, but without impacting opiate receptors. Chinese researchers report that 75 mg of THP daily was effective in reducing nerve pain in 78% of the patients tested. Although the herb is far weaker than its stronger narcotic cousins, it is safer, and still has value in pain and stress relief, and as a sedative for insomnia. Corydalis can also be very sedating and therefore useful if there is insomnia associated with the pain. In insomnia patients, sleep was induced within 20-30 minutes after oral administration of 100-200mg dl-THP, without subsequent dizziness or vertigo. Because of its usefulness in blood deficiency as well as in pain relief, it is an ideal herb for menstrual pain relief. Chinese researchers have demonstrated success in treating painful menstruation (dysmenorrhea), abdominal pain after childbirth, and headache with THP. THP's analgesia and sedation have been shown to work, at least in part, by blocking postsynaptic dopamine receptors in the central nervous system. Unlike tranquilizers though, it does not affect brain serotonin levels, deplete monoamine stores, or block GABA receptors. It also has been shown to stimulate the secretion of ACTH (adreno-corticotrophic hormone) by the pituitary gland, which controls aspects of stress. THP also has very valuable cardiovascular actions. It has been shown to decrease the stickiness of platelets, thereby protecting against stroke. It has also been shown to lower blood pressure and heart rate. THP also has been shown to have a muscle relaxing effect, working on smooth muscles as well as skeletal muscles. It reduced coronary resistance, increased coronary bloodflow, and dilated coronary blood vessels in rabbits, cats, and mice. The cumulative effect is to promote rhythmic efficiency.
