The Tea Tree (melaleuca alternifolia) is a member of the Myrtaceae family and is an indigenous species to Northern New South Wales, Australia. The oil is found within the cells of the leaves, and as the Tea Tree is extremely fast-growing it is a constantly renewable resource. The crushed leaves were used as a general antiseptic by the Native Australians for thousands of years. Captain James Cook and his crew used the leaves as a substitute for tea, hence the name. Unlike the dilute tea, however, the concentrated oil should be used topically, not ingested. Tea Tree oil is an effective bactericide killing a broad spectrum of bacteria and a range of stubborn fungi. It is safe for healthy tissue and does not inhibit normal cell growth and rejuvenation. Tea Tree oil is a powerful organic solvent and will actually dissolve the lumps of white blood cells which make pus. The oil contains numerous chemicalsknown as terpenoids. The oil kills fungus and bacteria, including those resistant to some antibiotics. A single blind study has shown topical application of 5% tea tree oil in people with acne is as helpful as benzoylperoxide and has fewer side effects. Tea tree oil contributes to an extremely effective antibacterial shampoo. A double blind study found 100% tea tree oil applied topically was as effective as the antifungal medicine clotrimazole for people with athlete’s foot fungus affecting the toe nails. Dilute solutions, containing no more than 5% tea tree oil, can safely be used as a very effective mouthwash. Unlike many antiseptics, Tea Tree oil kills bacteria as effectively in the real environment of the body as it does in the test tube. Its solvent nature allows it to penetrate into skin layers, even reaching inaccessible sites such as the fingernails and toenails. |

''Much used in California as a bitter tonic and a stimulating balsamic expectorant and is a most useful vehicle to disguise the unpleasant taste of quinine. Male fern and Hydrastis. In asthma, the leaves are often smoked. Aromatic syrup is the best vehicle for quinine.'' King's 1898 Dispensatory: ''Eriodictyon (or Mountain balm) has been recommended in the treatment of laryngeal and bronchial affections, and in chronic pulmonary difficulties generally. It has also been eulogized in the treatment of asthma and hay-fever, in combination with Grindelia robusta.'' ''That it possesses some efficiency as a stimulant, in the treatment of chronic mucous affections of the respiratory passages, is undoubtedly true; but that it deserves the high encomiums passed upon it in the treatment of laryngo-bronchial and chronic pulmonary maladies, admits of great doubt; at least, the writer has met with no success with it in any of the above diseases that was superior, or even equal, to the results obtained by some of our old and well-known remedial agents.'' ''It has likewise been advised in the treatment of hemorrhoids, and in chronic catarrh of the bladder. Catarrhal gastritis is said to have been successfully treated with it. The article is generally employed in the form of fluid extract and specific yerba santa. The dose of the former varies from 15 minims to 1 fluid drachm; of the latter, 10 to 30 minims, taken in a little syrup, and repeating the dose every 3 or 4 hours.'' American Materia Medica, 1919 (Ellingwood): ''It is of value in chronic bronchitis, chronic pneumonitis and in phthisis pulmonalis, in allaying the cough which seems to increase the patient's feebleness and advance the development of the disease. It is an excellent remedy combined with grindelia robusta. It acts well in all forms of cough where there is dryness of the mucous membranes, in conjunction with other directly indicated remedies.'' ''It is prepared in the form of a syrup, and like prunus virginiana, can be made a basis or vehicle for other agents. The syrup conceals the bitter taste of quinine admirably.'' Eclectic Materia Medica, 1922 (Felter): ''A stimulating expectorant having a kindly and beneficial action upon digestion. The Aero machine utilizes a micro hydro-spinner to deliver a highly oxygenated mist of nutrient solution to the bare roots of plants. The plants are grown in net baskets containing a plastic rootguard lid to block out light into the net basket and the nutrient solution. The net basket sits in a hole drilled out in the aero machines lid. The lid contains a knob to allow for easy inspection of the root zone by lifting the lid. The aero 4 and aero 6 lid contains 4 legs to lift the lid and the plants out of the aero machine and set next to the tub so as not to damage the sensitive roots. For a small increase in cost, growers can also utilize expanded clay grow rock in the net baskets for added plant support, and stability. Aeroponics is one of the fastest plant cultivation methods to grow vegetables, herbs, flowers and houseplants due to the high level of dissolved oxygen to the root zone. Plants will achieve an increase in water and nutrient uptake over conventional soil gardening methods. Soil tends to bind up crucial minerals and therefore plants tend to expend a lot of energy pulling the minerals away from the positive ions such as clay in the soil. With aeroponics the cation (positively charged ion) exchange is neutral for optimum nutrient uptake and accelerated growth. For indoor hydrogardening applications American Agritech recommends a metal halide or high-pressure sodium lighting system depending on plant variety, stage of growth and plant cultivation methods, ranging from 100 watts for the Aero 4, 150 watts for the Aero 6 and 250-400 watts for the Aero 9. Includes instruction manual, reservoir, pump, net pots and rootguards. Neoprene inserts, which must be ordered separately, can be used in place of the rootguards. Use with Power Clone, Woods, Dip N Grow, or Hormex. A Biological Fungicide is also recommended such as RootShield. |
