This is a great starter setup that fits perfectly under a 400-watt lighting system. It comes with everythingyou need to grow 6 medium to large-sized plants, including a seed-starting tray & dome, pump, timer, pH kit, nutrients, reservoir, growing medium, etc. Just add some sunshine or a lighting system & you're set! This is Starwest's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Used as an infusion, decoction, extract, tincture and salve. Delicious Red Clover Tea: Red Clover Blossoms Lemon Honey Fresh mint leaves -and/or- Several dandelion leaves Put the fresh or dried blossoms and leaves, with or without the mint and dandelion, into a 2-cup earthenware teapot. Fill teapot with boiling water, cover, and infuse for 5 to 10 minutes over very low heat. Strain into a hot cup, add a twist of lemon and sweeten with honey. Red Clover salve is useful for children with skin problems, such as eczema or psoriasis. Also useful for adults. Red Clover is also a reliable expectorant and anti-spasmodic, thus useful for bronchitis and whooping cough. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The fluid extract of Trifolium is used as an alterative and antispasmodic. An infusion made by 1oz. to 1 pint of boiling water may with advantage be used in cases of bronchial and whooping-cough. Fomentations and poultices of the herb have been used as localapplications to cancerous growths.' 'Dosages: 1 drachm of fluid extract, 1 to 2 drachms of infusion.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Red clover is an excellent alterative, and one of the few remedies which favorably influences pertussis. In earlier editions of this work it was stated that 'a strong infusion of the plant is said to afford prompt relief in whooping-cough, suspending the spasmodic cough entirely in 2 or 3 days; it is to be given in ½ fluid ounce, every 1 or 2 hours, throughout the day.' Since then the remedy has come into extensive use, but the statement should be modified, as it does not reach all classes of cases. When the proper case is found it acts promptly, but as yet the specific indications in this complaint have not been discovered.' 'It is also a remedy in other spasmodic coughs, as those of measles, bronchitis, laryngitis, phthisis, etc.' 'It is also highly recommended in ill-conditioned ulcers of every kind, and deep, ragged-edged, and otherwise badly-conditioned burns. It possesses a peculiar soothing property, proves an efficient detergent, and promotes a healthful granulation.' 'The infusion may be used freely; a strong tincture may be prepared from the recently dried flowers (viii) in 50 per cent alcohol (Oj) The dose of this will range from 1 to 60 drops; specific trifolium, 1 to 60 drops.' American Materia Medica, 1919 (Ellingwood): 'The agent is also prescribed in irritable conditions of the larynx and air passages, especially if evidenced by spasmodic cough. Shiitake mushrooms have been hailed for both their culinary and medicinal benefits in Japan and other parts of Asia for hundreds of years, and their popularity worldwide increases every year. Found primarily on thicker-barked hardwoods like oak, they also do well on 'scrub' hardwoods like alder. Mycelium is whitish in color, becoming brown with age. Either stumps or logs can be inoculated. When properly cared for, our hardy strain of Shiitake will beginto fruit in as little as 6 months, with the most substantial fruitings appearing 1 year from inoculation. Fungi Perfecti's Plug Spawn consists of mushroom mycelium growing on small, spiral-grooved birch dowels. By using the dowels to inoculate cut hardwood logs or stumps, mushroom mycelium can be encouraged to grow throughout or colonize the wood. Once the wood is fully colonized (typically 9-12 months) mushrooms will spring forth from cracks or channels in the wood. Fungi Perfecti's Plug Spawn comes with a 10-page instruction booklet. Generally, the best time of year to inoculate logs and stumps is in the Spring, after your last hard frost. However, you can inoculate your logs any time up to 2-3 weeks before consistently (i.e. 'round the clock) freezing temperatures set in for the Winter. The idea is to allow the mushroom mycelium growing on the Plug Spawn time to establish itself in its new home before it goes into dormancy over the Winter. Logs should be cut to lengths of 3-4 feet, and are best if they do not exceed 14 inches in diameter. Use a 5/16' drill bit in a high-speed drill to drill 2-inch holes no more than 4 inches apart, evenly spaced along the logs. Stumps should be inoculated along the circumference of their face, in the border between the bark and the heartwood. Insert 1 plug per hole and whack it in with a hammer. A 3-4 foot log can take 50 or more plugs, while stumps usually hold 30-50 plugs Holes can be sealed with cheese wax or beeswax to protect the mycelium while it is growing; although this step can be helpful, it is not absolutely necessary. Our Plug Spawn prefers to grow on hardwoods, with the exception of the Conifer Coral Mushroom, which grows on conifers, and the Phoenix Oyster, which grows well on firs. Most species can be grown on either logs or stumps. Non-aromatic hardwoods such as oak, poplar (cottonwood), elm, maple and similar woods are very good candidates for log cultivation. Alder is a good wood for the cultivation of Oyster and Shiitake mushrooms, but must be kept above ground because it will decompose quickly in contact with the soil. (We do not recommend using aromatic woods such as cedar or eucalyptus.) Thick-barked woods are preferable over 'paper-bark' woods such as birch, and any log that is shedding it's bark should not be used. Logs should be cut one to three months in advance of plugging. Cutting your logs in the late Winter or early Spring helps to insure that they have a high sugar content, although this is not strictly necessary. Freshly-cut |
