The amino acid arginine, found in many foods, assists in wound healing, stimulates immune function, helps remove excess ammonia from the body, and aids in the secretion of the hormones glucagon, insulin, and growth hormone. Ornithine, another amino acid, is manufactured by the body when arginine is metabolized during the production of urea. In a controlled trial, weight trainers, combining 500 mg of arginine and 500 mg ornithine, twice a day, five times a week, demonstrated, after only five weeks, a greater decrease in body fat than when the same workout was combined with a placebo. The same combination, in many but not all studies, has demonstrated an increase in sperm count. Likewise both animal and human studies have shown this combination to improve wound healing. Many hospital studies have shown this combination to be helpful in recovery from acute illnesses. This is Frontier's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. Tapioca is a refined starch obtained from the root of the cassava plant Manihot utilissima (synonym Manihot esculenta), which is also variously known as manioc and yuca, and, in the old herbals, mandioca. Cassava is native to South America, but is now extensively grown in tropical regions the world over and is among the top half dozen cash crops of the tropics. Mrs. Grieve covers the history of this originally South American food below. Cassava has a very high starch content at 24%, most of which is stored asfood reserved in the root of the plant. Cassava starch has an interesting property of forming into a stringy mass once dissolved in water; so most tapioca is sold as small balls, or pearl tapioca. Pearl tapioca is manufactured by extracting the juice from cassava roots leaving just the pulp. This pulp is soaked in water, then kneaded to release as much starch as possible. The fibrous remains of the root are strained away and the resultant liquid is dropped onto a hotplate, where they dry, gelatinize and form into the familiar pearls. Tapioca is also sold in flour form, which is simply known as tapioca starch. Tapioca starch is used as a thickening agent, in much the same manner as cornflour (cornstarch), while tapioca pearls are generally used in sweet dishes. South-East Asia has become the spiritual home of pearl tapioca desserts, where a mouthwatering array of differently scented confections can be found. A tapioca drink originated in Taiwan in the 1980s. It is a sweet beverage served in a myriad of mostly fruit flavors -- honeydew, mango, kiwi, strawberry, lemon -- but what makes it so much fun are the large globules of tapioca in each glass. Tapioca drinks are known by many names: bubble tea, boba drink, pearl tea drink, boba iced tea, boba nai cha, zhen zhou nai cha, pearl milk tea, pearl iced tea, black pearl tea, tapioca ball drink, pearl shake or QQ (which means chewy in Chinese). Forget that bland white pudding - those are multi-colored chewy bubbles about ½ inch in diameter, lurking in the bottom of the glass. The drinks are served with short fat straws wide enough to accommodate the tapioca pearls, which slide up the straw and into your mouth. In consistency, the tapioca pearls are somewhere between Jell-O and gummy-bears. Their ability to absorb color and flavor makes them a versatile favorite. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends White Willow Bark for 'Diseases accompanied by fever, rheumatic ailments, headaches.' Average daily dosage corresponding to 60 - 120 mg total salicin. Mode of Administration: Liquid and solid preparations for internal use. Note: Combinations with diaphoretic drugs could be considered. Actions: Antipyretic; Antiphlogistic; Analgesic.' Willow bark is official in the German Pharmacopeia. In German pediatric medicine, willow bark is used as an antipyretic component of various herbal preparations, particularly in combination with diaphoretic herbs. The British Herbal Compendium and the European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy concur with the judgement of the German Commission E. Willow barks of several different species have traditionally been used by Native Americans from Florida to Canada for pain relief. The glycoside salicin, from which the body manufactures salicylic acid, is the basis of the anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects of willow. Natural salicylic acid is reported to produce fewer side effects than the synthetic acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), and, although initially slower acting, seems to be more long-lasting. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Tonic, antiperiodic and astringent. It has been used in dyspepsiaconnected with debility of the digestive organs. In convalescence from acute diseases, in worms, in chronic diarrhoea and dysentery, its tonic and astringent combination renders it very useful.' 'Dosages: 1 drachm of the powdered root. 1 or 2 fluid ounces of the decoction.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Willow bark is tonic, antiperiodic, and an astringent bitter. It has been given in intermittents, dyspepsia, connected with debility of the digestive organs, passive hemorrhages, chronic mucous discharges, in convalescence from acute diseases, and in worms. Although occasionally substituted for the cinchona bark, it is inferior in activity.' 'In chronic diarrhoea and dysentery, the tonic and astringent combination of the willow renders it very eligible. It may be given in substance, in doses of 1 drachm of the powder, repeated as indicated; or of the decoction, 1 or 2 fluid ounces, 4 or 5 times a day. The decoction has also proved efficient as a local application to foul and indolent ulcers.' American Materia Medica, 1919 (Ellingwood): 'This to an extent is antimalarial and like the other agents of this class it improves the tone of the gastro-intestinal tract and the glandular organs. It corrects impaired conditions of all mucous membranes and is thus of value in excessive catarrhal discharges from these membranes, being freely given in bronchorrhea, gastric catarrh, catarrhal diarrhea and in leucorrhea, in all cases acting more |
