This is Frontier's nitrogen-flushed double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. Menthol, the major constituent of Peppermint Oil, is one of the main ingredients in Peppermint. It looks like a rock crystal when isolated. It is obtained from various species of Mentha. It has a strong odor of peppermint, and a warm aromatic taste followed by a sensation of cold on drawing air into the mouth. Menthol's refreshing aroma and cooling action, along with its stimulant and anti-septic qualities have led to its widespread use for medicinal purposes in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. It is used: As a flavoring agent (candy, gum, cigarettes, cough drops, and so on) In some cold sore medications In some ointments to treat aches and pains(Ben-Gay, Therapeutic Mineral Ice) As an inhalant, lozenge, or ointment to treat nasal congestion In liniments to relieve pain and itching In some medications to treat sore mouth/throat/gums In some mouthwashes The British Journal of Medicine in 1879 wrote of Peppermint 'that Menthol relieves Headaches and Neuralgia,' shortly after it was admitted into the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia. A menthol inhalation is the best way to clear the sinuses and relieve the stuffiness and headaches associated with catarrh. Put one small menthol crystal into a bowl of hot water or an herbal infusion and then breathe in the rising vapour. Menthol is strong, and must be used very sparingly. Menthol is too strong for little children, and can cause them to gag. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Peppermint oil for 'Internal: Spastic discomfort of the upper gastrointestinal tract and bile ducts, irritable colon, catarrhs of the respiratory tract, inflammation of the oral mucosa. External: Myalgia and neuralgia.' 'Peppermint oil consists of the essential oil of Mentha piperita... Peppermint oil contains a minimum of 4.5 percent and a maximum of 10 percent (w/w) esters, calculated as menthyl acetate, at least 44 percent (w/w) free alcohols, calculated as menthol and a minimum of 15 percent and maximum of 32 percent (w/w) ketones, calculated as menthone.' 'Contraindications: Obstruction of bile ducts, gallbladder inflammation, severe liver damage. In case of gallstones, to be used only after consultation with a physician. Preparations containing peppermint oil should not be used on the face, particularly the nose, of infants and small children.' 'Actions: Antispasmodic; Carminative; Cholagogue; Antibacterial; Secretolytic; Cooling.' Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The chief constituent of Peppermint oil is Menthol, but it also contains menthyl acetate and isovalerate, together with menthone, cineol, inactive pinene, limonene and other less important bodies.' 'On cooling to a low temperature, separation of Menthol occurs, especially if a few crystals of that substance be added to start crystallization |
