The 1997Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Yarrow for 'Internal: Loss of appetite, dyspeptic ailments, such as mild, spastic discomforts of the gastrointestinal tract. As sitz bath: Painful, cramp-like conditions of psychosomatic origin (in the lower part of the female pelvis).' 'Daily dosage: 4.5 g yarrow herb; 3 tsp. pressed juice from fresh plants; 3 g yarrow flowers; equivalent preparations. For sitz baths: 100 g yarrow per 20 l (5 gal.) of water. Mode of Administration: Comminuted drug for teas and other galenical preparations for internal use and for sitz baths, pressed juice of fresh plants for internal use. Actions: Choleretic; Antibacterial; Astringent; Antispasmodic.' Confirming the judgement of the German Commission E, the contemporary British Herbal Compendium lists Yarrow for internal use for feverish conditions, common cold, and digestive complaints; and its topical use for slow-healing wounds and skin inflammations. Yarrow tea is a traditional Native American diaphoretic (sweat) remedy for fevers and colds. Yarrow infusions and decoctions have also traditionally been used as a gastrointestinal aid. Yarrow also acts as a urinary antiseptic, and has traditionally been used for such infections as cystitis. Yarrow also lowers blood pressure by dilating the peripheral vessels, and so is very helpful for hypertension. Yarrow decoction and ointment can be applied topically to bruises, sprains, and swellings. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Diaphoretic, astringent, tonic, stimulant and mild aromatic.' 'Yarrow Tea is a good remedy for severe colds, being most useful in the commencement of fevers, and in cases of obstructed perspiration. The infusion is made with 1 oz. of dried herb to 1 pint of boiling water, drunk warm, in wineglassful doses. It may be sweetened with sugar, honey or treacle, adding a little Cayenne Pepper, and to each dose a teaspoonful of Composition Essence. It opens the pores freely and purifies the blood, and is recommended in the early stages of children's colds, and in measles and other eruptive diseases.; 'A decoction of the whole plant is employed for bleeding piles, and is good for kidney disorders. It has the reputation also of being a preventative of baldness, if the head be washed with it.' 'Preparations: Fluid extract, ½ to 1 drachm. An ointment made by the Highlanders of Scotland of the fresh herb is good for piles, and is also considered good against the scab in sheep.' 'An essential oil has been extracted from the flowers, but is not now used.' 'Linnaeus recommended the bruised herb, fresh, as an excellent vulnerary and styptic. Whole vanilla beans, rather than extract, will impart the purest, most intense vanilla flavor to your recipes. The best-quality, Vanilla planifolia, comes from Mexico, Madagascar, and Indonesia. Vanilla planifolia is native to Central America, where it is still grown commercially. The closely related Vanilla tahitensis, Tahiti vanilla, is native to Oceania. The Aztecs called Vanilla 'tlilxochitl,' 'black flower.' It flavored their 'cacao water,' 'cacahuatl' in the Aztec tongue Náhuatl, 'chocol haa' in the Mayan tongue. (The Aztecs were to the Mayans as the Dorians to the Mycenaeans, if one may make so bold.) Cacahuatl was made from vanilla, cocoa beans, honey, hot water and other spices, such as annatto. The Aztecs considered vanilla to be an aphrodisiac. Vanilla flavors many chocolate and confectionery items and several liqueurs such as Crème de Cacao and Galliano. V. pompona, also called Guadeloupe vanilla or Antilles vanilla from the West Indies, and V. tahitiensis, from Tahiti, are sometimes used as V. planifolia replacements. They are 'inferior' only in the sense that they are different. The aroma and flavor are slightly different, but taste is personal, and the alternative species are preferred by some. Fresh vanilla pods are tasteless - the vanillin is bound as a glycoside and must be set free by enzymatic reaction, normally induced by a sequence of blanching or steaming operations. It is this, and the equally labor-intensive need for manual pollination outside its originary South American home, that makes vanilla so expensive. Store vanilla beans in an airtight container in a cool, dark space along with your other spices. The deepest vanilla flavor is found in the seeds, the dark, sticky pulp inside the bean. Once you've extracted the seeds, there are a few ways to use them and the scraped pod: Infuse a liquid with the bean and seeds. Drop the seeds and the scraped pod into warm liquid, such as scalded milk or cream, and leave them to infuse for at least 30 minutes and up to an hour. Strain the pod from the liquid (the tiny specks of vanilla seeds will remain). Use the flavored liquid for your recipe. Add the scraped seeds directly to a batter. For example, add the seeds to the butter and sugar before creaming when making cookies. Add a small piece of a split bean (no need to scrape first) to a savory stew at the beginning of cooking. This is especially good in rich shellfish dishes or highly spiced meat dishes. A 2-inch piece of vanilla bean (halved and scraped) equals about 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract. Wild yam is a strong antispasmodic and is anti-inflammatory, thus helpful with the pain of rheumatoid arthritis, cramps, and upset stomach. Wild Yam is the original source of diosgenin, the steroidal saponin used for contraceptive hormone manufacture. Wild yam is helpful with the nausea of pregnant women and dysmenorrhoea. Another compound, dioscoretine, has been shown to lower blood triglycerides and to raise HDL ('good') cholesterol. An extract of wild yam was found to have antioxidant properties. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'Much saponin has been found in the roots, and a substance improperly called dioscorein, obtained by precipitating the tincture with water.' 'Medicinal Action and Uses: Antispasmodic. Perhaps the best relief and promptest cure for bilious colic, especially helpful in the nausea of pregnant women. Valuable also in painful cholera morbus with cramps, neuralgic affections, spasmodic hiccough and spasmodic asthma.' Dosage: ½ to 1 drachm of fluid extract. Dioscorein, ¼ to 4 grains. King’s 1898 Dispensatory: 'In former editions I have termed this agent an antispasmodic, and solely for the reason that it cures bilious colic. And I can truly say that nearly all remedies have thus been classified, not from any positive knowledge of their action, but from the results following their administration. A change of classification based upon the known action of remedies is certainly desirable, and I am glad to observe that the attention of physicians has already been attracted in this direction.' 'In the absence of any positive knowledge concerning the action of dioscorea, perhaps it would be better to say that it is a specific in bilious colic, having proved almost invariably successful in doses of ½ pint of the decoction, repeated every half hour, or hour. Specific dioscorea may be given in 5-drop doses every 5 minutes. No other medicine is required, as it gives prompt and permanent relief in the most severe cases (Prof. J. King). In fact it is not only of value in bilious colic, but in all forms of colic and other painful abdominal neuroses, and all forms of gastro-intestinal irritation.' 'If itdoes not relieve in one hour, the medicine should be discontinued. It has allayed the pain incident to the passage of biliary calculi when given with full doses of gelsemium (Webster).
