Small (3/4") green leaves which are lightly veined and almost bronze when they emerge. The Sageretia sheds its bark and the trunk becomes multi-colored. Also known as Banyan Fig and Taiwan Ficus. The Retusa has small, dark green leaves which alternate up the stem and which are more ovalthan the Benjamina. Grey to reddish bark dotted with small, horizontal flecks, similar to tiger-like markings. All have heavy trunks and all are trained in the traditional curved shape. In 1768 Admiral Louis de Bougainville discovered the vine that bears his name. Through the ensuing years, this Brazillian Beauty has assumed its rightful place as one the most popular, spectacular and beautiful tropical plants. The vibrant purple and pink colors comes not from the small white tubular flowers, but from the three large paper-like bracts that surround each flower. Hence the name "paper flower". The Bougainvillea will typically lose some leaves for a short time during the winter due to lower lighting conditions.
